ICS 2006 salutatorian speech
given by Julieta Hinojosa
The following speech was
recently given by Julieta
Hinojosa, the Immaculate
Conception School Salutatorian
for 2006.
Graduation speeches are
supposed to be long and
sentimental; however, this one
isn't. I do realize that this might
be the last time this class is
together after many days in ICS,
so 1 would like to tell my
teachers and classmates a few
last things.
Teachers, thank you for all of
your support in school and
outside of school. It is because
of your determination and
patience that we are able to
understand even the most boring
lessons.
To my parents, thank you for
allowing me to study here at
ICS; it has been both a privilege
and a blessing. Thank you.
And now, classmates-
buddies, students, friends,
brothers, and sisters—Wow, you
have no idea what my
experience at ICS has been with
all of you. God couldn't have
given me a better class to spend
time with since kindergarten.
We have grown so much, as
much from the first day of
kinder to this point--our 8th
grade graduation. We started
from playing "Boys against
Girls" in tag or from tears of
being alone in school away from
our parents to dancing all night
in parties. Although these 10
years are long gone in the past,
they are kept in my memories. I
will never forget passing notes
during class, talking on our way
to mass on Friday's, unceasingly
walking at Jamaicas, sitting on
the grass during picnics, or
simply sitting in a desk with all
of you around. Surely, I am
going to miss knowing that there
is always someone, anyone in
class that knows me like a sister.
Although, it's not like if we are
going to be sent to different
continents or anything; we are
still going to live in the Valley,
chatting online every night =).
Congratulations class of
2006!! Best class in the
existence of ICS--our second
home.

Two members of the McNair
Scholars Program at Texas
A&M University-Kingsville,
including one Starr County
native, were chosen and recently
attended the second annual
Arkansas McNair Scholars
Senior Summer Camp
Hilda I. Garcia, a senior
bilingual education major from
Roma, and Marisol Cruz
Gomez, a senior psychology
major from Odem, attended the
camp May 31 through June 3.
The camp enabled the students
to prepare for graduate school by
gaining valuable information
through networking, informative
sessions on the graduate school
process and preparation for the
GRE. When they return to
campus, Garcia and Gomez will
share what they learned with
their fellow McNair Scholars.
Mary L. Gonzalez, assistant
vice president of special
programs at A&M-Kingsville,
presented one of the sessions at
the camp entitled Finding the
Resources to Finance Graduate
School.
The Ronald E. McNair
Scholars Program is named after
Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an
astronaut who died in the space
shuttle Challenger and was the
second black American to fly in
space. The program offers
students exposure to the
techniques .used in major
research programs by allowing
them to conduct research under
the guidance of graduate mentors
from the disciplines in which
they hope to pursue graduate
study.
In addition to research, the
students receive assistance
preparing for graduate school
including help with application
letters, tutoring for graduate
school entrance exams and help
obtaining financial aid.

Fifth Year Anniversary
In Loving Memory of
Alejandra "Landi" Yvette Garza
July 16, 1980-June 30, 2001
"This is the day the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it. "
Psalm 118:24
A new day has begun, and the world is forever
changed. Your passing has left a void in our lives,
but your memory fills our hearts; the memory of your
beautiful face, gorgeous smile, and contagious laugh.
Despite your absence, you have taught us to love
stronger, laugh harder, and live fuller. You may have
gone to heaven before us, but you didn't leave us
alone. You are our angel by our side everyday,
invisible to our eyes, but strongly felt in our hearts.
Holy mass, celebrating Landi's life, will be given on
Friday, June 30, 2006 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 16, 2006
at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church.
Our family will appreciate your presence and your prayers.
