Nine outstanding students at
Rio Grande City High School
were honored by the Florence J.
Scott Study Club for Achieving
Inspirational Merit during the
annual AIM. Banquet held
recently at Che's Restaurant.
The 2007 honorees were
Francisco Barrera, Gloeli
Calderon, Jennifer Castafieda.
Jessica Chapa, Abel Davila.
Romeo Garza, Jr., Andrea
Guerra, Leo l.opez III, and
Kenni Sunga.
fhelma Molina, president of
the F.J. Scott Study Club,
I welcomed the honorees and
their guests. Student guest
Gloeli Calderon sang the Star
Spangled Banner following the
pledges, led by Olga Gonzalez,
and table grace, led by Tissa
Peterson.
I Following a delicious meal,
Bitsy Margo led everyone
present in a Federation Day
Observance in recognition of the
organization's founding and its
affiliation with Texas Federation
of Women's Clubs and the
General Federation of Women's
Clubs.
Mrs. Molina introduced each
honoree and gave each an
opportunity to address the
group Lach was presented with
a framed certificate as an A I M
honoree. Assisting with the
presentations was Vice-
President Aminta Reyna.
Francisco Javier Barrera, son
of Guadalupe and Olga Barrera,
served as parliamentarian for the
National Honor Society, served
on Student Council, was vice-
president of the Law
Enforcement Explorers, and was
elected senator at the Lorenzo de
Zavala Youth Legislature, where
he received the Outstanding
Leadership Award in Texas,
2005. An AP scholar, he
qualified for regional in UIL
speech and debate, was a Coca-
Cola Regional Scholar, won the
World History medal, and was a
State and World finalist in
Odyssey of the Mind. He-
received a Congressional
nomination to attend USMAPS
and the United States Military
Academy.
Gloeli F. Calderon, daughter
of Jose and Nona Calderon, was
Senior Class President and
Salutatorian for 2007. She
served the Rattler Band as Drum
Major and chaplain, and she was
named to the National Honor
Society. She was CFC Youth
Chapter Head and competed in
UIL current events. As a Rotary
Youth Leadership Award
program participant, she was
named "Miss RYLA."
This talented singer has used
her talent in service to her
church and the community,
serving as psalm singer and as
an altar server. She plans to
aitend the University of Texas at
Austin, majoring in biology to
become a physician and do
service for the community and
abroad. Both her older brother
and sister were named AIM
recipients.
Jennifer Castafieda is the
daughter of Norma Nelly
Castafieda. She was drum major
and a section leader for the
Rattler Band, which she
participated in for four years,
three of which she served as
historian. She earned UIL Solo
and Ensemble medals and was
named to the All-District band.
A member of the National
Honor Society, she was also
named to the National Honor
Roil and as * Texas Music
Scholar.
Jennifer won the Spanish
award and was a member of the
All-Region Orchestra. Her
plans are to major in Music
Education at Texas A&M
University-Kingsville and
become a music teacher at the
high school or university level.
Jessica Chapa, daughter of
Alberto and l.lisa Chapa, served
as 4-H President and president
of the Youth Board A varsity
cheerleader, she served as
captain. Jessica was named to
the National Honor Society and
Who's Who among America's
Students. She won the Renatra
Fusca Award for her participant
in Odyssey of the Mind, in
which she was a State and
World finalist.

Jessica won top honors in the
Starr County Youth Fair several
years with her poultry projects
and has been active in
community service through 4-H.
including narrating the Youth
Fair Pageant. She plans to
major in architecture at Texas
A&M University. Her future
plans are to return to the Rio
Grande Valley to design good
buildings.
As third-ranking graduate at
Rio High, Abel G. Davila is the
recipient of the F.J. Scott Study
Club scholarship for 2007. The
son of Carla Davila and Abel
Davila, he was vice-president of
the RGCHS Senior Class 2007
and reporter for the Rattler
Band. He was named to the All-
District Band and earned UIL
solo and ensemble medals, as
well as a Division 1 in Jazz and
a Division 2 in Concert
(Sweepstakes).
A National Honor Society
member, he won the Biology.
Pre-Cal, and U S. History
medals and was named to the
National Honor Roll. He was a
Rotary Youth Leadership Award
honoree and received the Border
Patrol Guard scholarship. He
plans to major in Music
Education at Texas A&M
University-Kingsville with
hopes of being a member of a
symphony orchestra
Romeo Garza. Jr. is the son of
Romeo Garza and Susi Pefia.
Romeo played an instrumental
part in the recent restoration of
the Robert E. Lee House, as well
as the Old Army Hospital, in the
historic Fort Ringgold. The
project was conducted by the
Twenty-first Century Program
of the Rio Grande City
Independent School District
Romeo assisted Program
Coordinator Adelina Villarreal
with efforts to recover valuable
artifacts and to beautify and
restore the buildings and their
surrounding area. His future
plans are to serve our nation
under the United States Marine
Corps and to pursue an eventual
career as a funeral director.
Andrea Dee Guerra, daughter
of Jaime and Berta Guerra, Jr.,
was both an outstanding athlete
and an outstanding student. She
was a member of the National
Honor Society and a standout in
track and field, as high as state
level This active cheerleader
was also a member of the
Runner's Club. Student Council,
and was Senior Class
representative. She earned Most
Valuable Pla>er Award in Track
and Field in 2006 and 2007 for
RGCHS and was named All-
State Track and Field 2006-
2007. She plans to become a
physician's assistant and will
pursue her studies at the
University of Texas at
Arlington.
Leonel J. Lopez III, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Leonel J. Lopez, Jr.,
earned his associate's degree at
South Texas College through the
DEMSA program, receiving
STC's 2007 Presidential
Inspirational Achievement
Award. A dedicated athlete at
Rio High, he was named Student
of the Week by KROV Channel
5 and All-State Academic Team
football player by the State of
Texas.
Active in church and
community activities, he served
as Chief Squire at Immaculate
Conception Church and is a
member of the Knights of
Columbus. Community service
has included HEB's l east of
Sharing, food and toy
collections, volunteering at the
Joe B. Evins Juvenile Center,
Retama Manor, and the Starr
County Memorial Hospital, and
serving as a volunteer basketball
coach for youth programs. Leo
plans to major in biology at
Texas A&M University in
College Station to become a .
family physician.
Kenni Sunga is the son of-
Arnel and Leilani Sunga
Positions of leadership included
serving as vice-president of the
National Honor Society, Senior ;
Class Parliamentarian, and
Chapter Head of CFC Youth.
He also served as Drum Major .
of the RGC marching Rattler,.
Band. Honors included being
named Head of the Class by the
Border Patrol for the month of
February and receiving honors. ■

of Texas at San Antonio as a
physics major. He plans to
pursue a career in dentistry as an

been one of the honorees for this
great achievement."
Rattler Football Camp
to conclude July 26
The Rattler Football Camp
2007 is scheduled to conclude on
Thursday. July 26 in La Grulla.
On July 23-24, the camp was
located at Ringgold Middle
School. The camp operated there
from 8:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m.
on each day.
The camp will be located in
La Grulla on July 25-26. The
camp there will also operate
from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
on both days.
The camp is open to
incoming seventh, eighth, and
ninth graders attending Ringgold
Middle School, Grulla Middle
School, Veterans Middle'
School, and Rio Grande City- ,
High School. There will be a
S15 fee for a shirt, bag and
towel.
