At their regular monthly
meeting on Tuesday evening,
April 15, the Rio Grande City
CISD board of trustees approved
a settlement with the U.S.
government that will allow
access to conduct surveys for the
congressionally-mandated
border fence.
The meeting was held at the
Veterans Middle School
Cafetorium located at 4000
West Eisenhower in Rio Grande
City.
The trustees approved the
settlement with the federal
government following their
executive session late in the
meeting.
Board President Basilio D.
Vi 1 larreaI, Jr later explained,
"We came to an agreement with
the U.S. government to allow
them to conduct surveys. We
were told the government cannot
be stopped from coming onto
anyone's property."
Villarreal stressed, "We are
requesting background checks
on all individuals coming to any
campus, that they notify us then
they come onto a campus, and to
make sure that the contractors
and subcontractors have proper
liability coverage in case an
accident or worse happens. The
federal government is agreeing
to these requirements."
"Also, we're insisting that they
maintain the integrity of the
Chachalaca Refuge," added the
board president. "Under this
agreement, they will keep
disturbances to this animal and
plant sanctuary to a minimum."
Villarreal concluded, "The
most important thing to us is to
maximize the safety of the
children in our school district."
The trustees approved Pay
Application No. 2 from
Leyendecker Construction, Inc.
for the new high school (near
Alto Bonito). Villarreal noted,
"The new high school is in
progress. They're doing a lot of
site work."
"They should put up forms for
some of the foundations in the
near future," predicted
Villarreal. "Everything is going
according to plan and schedule."
The trustees approved the
amendment of TASB Policy EIF
concerning academic-
achievement and graduation.
Villarreal explained, "This is an
adjustment that the minimum
needed to graduate from high
school is 22 credits. This was
basically a minor adjustment on
paper."
The trustees approved job
descriptions for Reading and
Mathematics Intervention
teachers The board president
stated, "We've made new job
descriptions for those particular
teachers We hadn't updated
those particular descriptions in a
number of years. We updated
them to make them relevant to
today's times."

carjacking at local store
The Rio Grande City Police

parking lot.
On Sunday, April 20 at
approximately 7:15 p.m., Rio
Grande City Police Officers
were radio dispatched to Wal
Mart in reference to a stolen
vehicle. Upon arrival, officers
met with the victim, who stated
that she had dropped off her

The woman indicated that she
parked the vehicle and turned it
off to wait for her aunt. The
driver stated that she had her
three-year-old daughter with her
in the back seat. At that time, an
unknown Hispanic female
approached her window and
started a conversation.
According to the driver, a
Hispanic male opened the door
and placed a knife to her
stomach and told her to move to
the rear of the vehicle.. She then
saw another Hispanic male in
the back seat. The female that
was talking to the driver then
got into the driver seat. At that
point, the male with the knife
got into the front passenger seat.
The driver indicated that she
was then told to turn over her
cell phone and money. She and
her daughter were then dropped
off on South Pete Diaz Ave just
north of the Rio Grande City
Port Of Entry. The vehicle then
proceeded to Mexico ( Camargo
