Becker CPA Exam
course offered by STC
The South Texas College
Continuing and Professional
Education program, in
partnership with Becker CPA
Review and Texas Society of
Certified Public Accountants of
the Rio Grande Valley, is
offering the Becker CPA Exam
Review Course.
The Saturday classes cover
the business, financial, audit and
regulation sections of the CPA
exam and will be held at the
STC Pecan Campus, 3201 W.
Pecan, McAllen.
Business is the first review
topic with Saturday classes on
April I9-May 3. Other topics
and dates are Financial Review.
May 31-June 28; Audit Review.
July I9-Aug. 2; and Regulation
Review, Aug. 23-Sept. 20.
Class times vary.
This is the third time STC
has offered the review course.

taxable property you owned or controlled on January 1st of

Who must file a rendition?
You must file a rendition if you own tangible personal
property that is used to produce income —such as the
inventory and equipment used by a business. If you ren-
der late, don't render or file an Incomplete or false rendi-
tion, a 10% to 50% penalty may be imposed.
Are there any advantages to you?
The advantages of filing a rendition are:
" You give your opinion of your property's v?lue. The
appraisal district must notify you In writing of any value
change and explain how you can protest that value to the
appraisal review board.
'* You record your correct mailing address so your tax bills will
go to the right address. If your bill it mailed to the wrong
address, the law still holds you responsible for paying your
taxes on time or paying extra charges for late payments.

What's the deadline?

Heat soars to summer peak levels
On Thursday, April 10, Starr County and the immediate Rio Grande City area experienced heat
typically seen during the peak of summer in July and August as temperatures soared far past 100
degrees. This reading of 106 degrees is shown by the Texas State Bank thermometer at approximately
5 p.m. High temperatures in the 90's have been the norm in recent days, even though Starr County
experienced a few nights in the low 50's with the passage of a mild cold front.

The Valley is suffering from
a teacher shortage and there are
simply not enough certification
programs available to provide
the quality training needed to
address this issue.' said Dr.
Shirley A. Reed, president of
STC. "With more and more
teaching positions leit unfilled
across Hidalgo and Starr
counties, we felt it was crucial to
do our part to address this
issue."
Courses are offered during
weekday evenings. Students are
able to specialize in more than
19 areas of education from K-
12th grades. Each student
completes six to eight weeks ol
classroom instruction and then
begin a paid internship with a
local school district in their area
of specialization w h i I e
continuing the rest of their
classroom instruction. STC
works with local school districts
to place students in these
internships and helps place
students post-certification.
In order to qualify for
program acceptance, applicants
must have earned a bachelor's
degree at an accredited college,
have earned an overall GPA of
2.5 during their bachelor's
studies and complete the formal
STC-ACP application process.
Qualified applicants will be
admitted on a first-come, first-
serve basis.

by the district for a number of

The trustees approved the
Summer Calendar for the 2007-
2008 school year. Villarreal
indicated that the calendar will
be the same that was in effect
for the summer of 2006-2007.
The trustees also approved the
School Calendar for the 2008-
2009 school year. This calendar 9
is similar to the one used for the
2007-2008 school year.
