The Florence J. Scott Study Club
honored 2002 Rio Grande City
MOBY Award winner, Eduardo
Lopez, Jr. at their annual A.I.M.
Award Banquet, where outstanding
Rio Grande City Migh School youth
are recognized by the Study Club.
The MOBY Award has been
sponsored since its inception at
RGCMS by the Study Club and the
Woman's Club of Rio Grande City,
making it possible for the ambassador
to attend the seminar without charge.
The nineteenth annual Flugh O'Brian
Youth Leadership (MOBY) West
Texas Leadership Seminar was held
June 6-9 in San Antonio.
Attendees were given the
opportunity to participate in activities
and hear outstanding speakers
focusing on the theme, "America's
Incentive System."
In the belief that America's
greatest resource is its youth, Hugh
O'Brian established the Foundation
in 1958. Its purpose is to seek out.
recognize and reward leadership
potential in high school sophomores.
The foundation's program is to bring
a select group of high school
sophomores with demonstrated
leadership qualities together with a
group of distinguished leaders in
business, education, government, and
the professions and let the two
interact. The youth get a realistic
look at what makes the American
incentive system work, enabling them
to think for themselves and to
effectively lead others.
A HOBY program initiative this
year was also an emphasis on
volunteerism by developing a
Leadership for Service program and
project as part of HOBY's
commitment to the president's
Summit for America's Future.
Eddie, the 2002 MOBY
Ambassador representing Rio Grande
City Migh School, is an Eagle Scout
and member of the National Fagle
Scout Association. Me has been
active in Student Council, H.O.S.A.,
and the varsity swim team. Eddie
has plans to attend the National
Hispanic Institute summer program.
His career goal is to become a
pharmacist, and he will continue his
studies at the University of Texas
Pan American after high school
graduation.
