City donates van to Miguel Aleman Red Cross
The City of Rio Grande City recently donated a 1997 Chrysler Town and Country van to the Miguel Aleman
Red Cross so emergency help can be more effectively provided to that community. Pictured left to right are

City of RGC donates vehicle
to Miguel Aleman Red Cross
The City of Rio Grande City has
donated a van to the Miguel
Aleman Red Cross that will be used
by that or}, : i/guion to help protect
residents of that area in emergency
situations.
Assistant Rio Grande City Police
Chief Eli Gonzalez noted that the
vehicle was donated to the Miguel
Aleman Red Cross in February. He
explained, "The vehicle was donated
by the City of Rio Grande City."
The vehicle donated to the
Miguel Aleman Red Cross was a
1977 Chrysler Town & Country
van, indicated Rio Grande City
Mayor Baldemar Garza.
"The Red Cross in Miguel
Aleman made a request for use of
an emergency vehicle such as a van
or a Suburban," stated Mayor
Garza. "I think they presented a
request to the (RGC) Rotary Club.
Ft was suggested that a vehicle
forfeited to the city could serve that
purpose. This matter was presented
to the (RGC) Board of Aldermen."
The mayor emphasized, "It will
be used by them to deal with
emergency situations. I think it's a
way to help our neighbors to the
south in the important areas of
public health and safety."
The van was presented to the
Miguel Aleman Red Cross at Fire
Station No. 2, located near the Rio
Grande City Municipal Airport,
which is adjacent to FM 3167
northwest of the city limits of Rio
Grande City.
Mayor Garza and Assistant Police
Chief Gonzalez represented the city
at the event. Three members of the
Miguel Aleman Red Cross were on
hand for the presentation. These
three individuals are also members
of the Miguel Aleman/Roma
Rotary Club.
Parade memorable event in
2004 Starr County Youth Fair
"An All-Starr Salute to the 12th
Cavalry" was the theme for the
annual Starr County Youth Fair
parade, held on Saturday morning,
March 6. Parade Marshals Billy
and Dolores Canales, were featured
at the head of the parade, which
was led by the JROTC Twelfth
Cavalry Memorial Unit from Rio
Grande City High School.
Numerous units from the
RGCHS JROTC marched,
including the color guard, which
also conducted ceremonies at the
Opening Ceremonies for the Fair
on Friday evening. The mounted
unit, covered wagon, and vehicles
provided for the JROTC were also
included. The JROTC deserves
recognition for its many
accomplishments and for the
honors it has earned.
The Roma High School band
was featured as lead-off band this
year. Other bands participating
were the Rio Grande City High
School band, Ringgold Middle
School band, Roma Middle School
band, and Grulla Middle School
band.
Cassandra Renee Rodriguez,
the 2004 Starr County Fair Queen,
and her court were featured on the
Queen's float sponsored by the
Starr County Fair Association
Board of Directors and pulled by
Ramirez Ford. Featured on the
float were Elizandra Falcon, first

Club resumes
Four rabies clinics are planned in
the Roma area from Monday, April
12 through Thursday, April 15.
The fee is $9.00 per dog or cat
vaccinated. Each animal vaccinated
must be three months of age or
older. Veterinarian Dr. Roberto S.
Margo emphasizes that pets three
months of age and older should be
vaccinated once a year.
Dr. Margo stresses that pet
owners need to keep the vaccination
of their animals up to date,
particularly because of the rabies
epidemic that has resulted in almost
120 confirmed cases of rabies and
one human fatality in Starr County
since September 1988.

U.S. Army Sergeant First Class
Javier Omar Trevino, a Roma
native, has been awarded the Bronze
Star Medal for heroic and
meritorious service in Operation
Iraqi Freedom from early May
through late December 2003.
The awarding of the Bronze Star
to Trevino was approved on Oct.
31, 2003 by Acting Secretary of the
Army R.L. Brownlee and Army
Brigadier General Martin Dempsey.
While deployed in Iraq, Trevino
served with Bravo Company, 2nd
Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment
of the 1st Armored Division.
Trevino is a native of Roma and
is a 1982 graduate of Roma High
School. He is the son of Angelina
G. Trevino and the late Alvino
Trevino. He and his wife, Heidi,
have one daughter, Felisha. Trevino
has two brothers, Emilio and Roel,
and one sister, Belsa T. Villarreal.
After returning from Iraq, Trevino
is now stationed at Fort Eustice in
Virginia.
Trevino is recognized in his
citation for "exceptionally
meritorious service while serving in
Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion,
501st Aviation Regiment in
support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
His inexhaustible training and
technical expertise resulted in the
safe and efficient deployment of Ins
detachment to Baghdad, outstanding
readiness of all assigned soldiers and
equipment, and the exceptional
mission accomplishment of the
unit while forward deployed in
combat. His exemplary performance
of duty reflects great credit on
himself, the 1st Armored Division
and the United State- Army "
Trevino was honored for his
service in Iraq from May 1, 2003
through Dec. 21. 2003
Trevino also served in Operation
Desert Shield and Operation Desert
Storm in the Persian Gulf in 1990-
1991.
The awarding of the Bronze Star
to Trevino was recommended by
Lieutenant Colonel James D.
Schrote, Battalion Commander;
Colonel Dyfierd A. Harris, Brigade
Commander; Brigadier General
Martin E. Dempsey, Division
Commander; and Captain Joseph J
Hodgson, Company Commander.
The Army indicated in its
narrative summary that "SFC
Trevino distinguished himself by
his exceptional managerial and
leadership abilities. His
inexhaustible training, support, and
inspiration of the 18 crew chiefs in
Bravo Company was the driving
force behind the highly successful
Salman Pak Air Assault and 100
percent mission succe- > on
Operation Scorpion 'ting.

Jaw.
"SFC Trevino was personally
responsible for the successful
deployment of the VIP
Detachment's aircraft, personnel,

RGC free rabies clinic
planned Saturday, April 3
A free rabies clinic will be
held for Rio Grande City
residents only on Saturday,
April 3 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at
El Quiosco, located in front of
Texas State Bank.
The fee for non-residents of
Rio Grande City to have their dog
or cat vaccinated is $9.00 per
animal.
Pets three months of age or older
should be vaccinated for rabies once
a year, indicates veterinarian Dr.
Roberto S. Margo. Only dogs or
cats three months of age and older
should be vaccinated.
Dr. Margo emphasizes the
importance of pet owners keeping
the vaccination of their animals up
to date, particularly because there
have been almost 120 confirmed
rabies cases and one human fatality

Judging of floats and decorated
vehicles was a real challenge this
year, according to Sonata Sanchez,
who led the team of dedicated
judges. "The excellent quality of
the youth entries inspired us to give
double winners in every category,"
she stated. There were money
prizes for the top floats in the youth
category, presented at the Parade of
Champions on Sunday.

congressional officials during last
week's Border Trade Alliance
conference in Washington. D.C.

Rio Grande City in my

running for re-election in Texas'
newly redrawn Congressional
District 25. which includes Starr

Stadium.
