STCC one step closer to
offering bachelor's degree
South Texas Community
College is one step closer to
offering a Bachelor of Applied
Technology degree. At its April 22
meeting in Austin, th; Texas
Higher Education Coordinating
Board approved requests made by
STCC, Brazosport College and
Midland College to offer four-year
degrees.
The three colleges were selected
from among the state's 50
community colleges to be a part of
a 10-year pilot project approved by
the Texas Legislature in its last
session. The program allows
selected two-year colleges to offer
a limited number of applied
bachelor's degrees.
"This is a major hurdle we have
overcome," said Dr. Shirley A.
Reed, STCC president, who
attended today's meeting in Austin.
Reed said the Coordinating
Board approved STCC's plans to
offer a 120-semester credit hour
Bachelor of Applied T echnology.
"There appears to be a growing
trend in the offering of bachelor
degrees by community colleges."
Reed explained.
The state of Florida has
authorized community colleges to
award bachelor degrees and the
state of Arizona has also requested
authorization to do the same.
The next hurdle for STCC and
the two other community colleges
will be to receive accreditation
from the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools.
SACS will meet in December to
decide whether or not to approve
their requests to grant four-year
degrees. Currently, all community
colleges in Texas are on a Level I
classification. The community
colleges must have SACS approval
as Level II institutions in order to
award bachelor's degrees.
Juan E. Mejia, STCC interim
vice president for Instructional
Services, said
STCC will have to provide SACS
with documentation of appropriate
credentials for faculty teaching
credit courses leading to the
bachelor's degree. SACS is also
requ-ring appropriate library
resources, instructional support
services for faculty and students in
the bachelor's program, and
designation of administration
oversight for the bachelor's
program.
Mejia said the college hopes to
be ready to offer a BAT degree by
2005 if SACS approves the
college's request at the December
meeting.
STCC has a 10-year
reaffirmation from SACS and has
successfully undergone two
Institutional Effectiveness site
visits from the Texas Higher
Education Coordinating Board.

Pastor urges fervent prayers
for soldiers, national leaders
Pastor Bob Alderman
First Baptist Church
I am heavily burdened this week
for the men and women serving our
country in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Several of these brave soldiers
have given their life in the battle
for freedom from oppression and
safety in our own land Many more
are still in danger.
While most of us know
someone who is actively involved
in our armed forces and are
currently in harm's way, we will
not be picking up an M-16 and
fighting ourselves.
Can we stili play a very real and
active part in this conflict?
Absolutely!
Pray.
In our deepest times of trouble
we are to cry out to God with faith,
hope and love. Psalm 34:4-6 "I
prayed to the LORD, and he
answered me, freeing me from all
my fears. Those who look to him
for help will be radiant with joy;
no shadow of shame will darken
their faces." I cried out to the
LORD in my suffering, and he
heard me. He set me free from all
my fears."
Pray for our country
Pray for the United States of
America! Pray for repentance, for
faith, for a return to the Biblical
principles or nation was founded
upon. For some direction read 2
Chronicles 7:14-16.
Pray for our leaders.
Pray for our President and U.S.
Government leaders. Pray for the
leadership of other countries.
God instructs this in 1 Timothy
2:1-4; we must lift our leaders
before God and plead for His
mercy and conviction upon them
Pray for the salvation of the lost.
We are always to be seeking
salvation for the world. Think of
how our current situation would
change if Sadaam Hussain, Osama
Bin Laden and Kim Jon II would
come to know Jesus Christ as their
Lord and Savior? Do you believe
God is to inadequate to save them?
I sure don't! God is able! We need
to believe He is able and earnestly
pray for them!
Pray for those who we
are at war with.
Matthew 5:44 "But I say, love
your enemies! Pray for those who
persecute you!"
Pray again! And again.
Effectively, fervently and
persistently! Never give up, never
quit1 Pray expecting God to
answer your prayers, then rejoice
when He proves faithful.
Read the Word of Cod
Seek comfort, direction and
peace in His Word. It has been long
said that God speaks when you
open your Bible and God is silent
when you close your Bible. Spend
some time today listening to God
through His Holy Word.
Go to church!
There is support and comfort to
be found in a body of like
believers Encourage one another.
Cry with one another. Help one
another deal with the realities of
our current world situation. This is
'tot the time to walk away from
God, His commands or His people.
Stand up in support of our
\. (Mir leadership hp;i <uir
military.
This is a time for unity and
faith. Now is the time for us to
rallv behind our troops, our
President and the United States of
America. We need to be patriotic.
Trust God.
Proverbs 3:5-9 "Trust in the
LORD with all your heart; do not
depend on your own
understanding. Seek his will In all
you do, and he will direct your
paths. Don't be impressed with
your own wisdom, instead, fear
the LORD and turn your back on
evil. Then you will gain renewed
health and vitality. Honor the
LORD with your wealth and with
tf>e best part of everything your
land produces . "
Know that God loves you, the
soldiers and all of the familie:;
touched by this war.
Know that only God knows
what is going to happen in the next
moment, hours or days. Trust Him
My trust is not in the U.S., the
U.N., duct tape or M-l tanks! M>
trast is eternally and totally in Jesus
Christ.
Seek Peace.
Work hard to be a minister of
reconciliation. Not only with the
nations or terrorists we are at war
with, but also with those next door
who may not act or believe the wa>
you do. Do not allow this war to
become a vessel that leads you to
sin against God or your neighbor.
Support one another.
Visit your friends and family
Visit those in the hospital, the
nursing homes and those who are
shut in.
Visit and spend time with
people! Know that God is deep!-
concerned about people. He has
great compassion for all creation.
Encourage them. Help "carry their
load" by being there to listen, to

By Local Amateur
film maker Gerald S.
Not only are there five
Imovies opening this week-
Icnd, but five different genre
to choose from In comedy
[we have Envy, staring Jack
Black and Ben Stiller, two of
my favorite comic actors, it
definitely has the potential to be very funny .
Bobby Jones, Stroke of Genius directed by Rowdy
Herrington and staring James Caviezel of The
Passion of the Christ, looks like it has to potential
to satisfy those who feel like watching a drama
this weekend If you feel like going to the movies
this weekend with your teenage daughter, or if
you're a teen age daughter planning on a trip to
the movies with your friends, you might want to
check out Mean Girls, staring Lindsay Lohan
from Freaky Friday I like Lindsay, she has great
energy and potential. For those of you who are
planning on going to the movies with a date you
might consider Laws of Attraction starring Pierce
Brosnan and Julianne Moore I have always en-
joyed Moore's performances especially in the film
The Hours, she has a strong feminine screen pres-
ence
Gerald's Pick: (rodsend, staring Greg Kin-
near and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos. I like both
Kinnear and Stamos and I look forward to seeing
them in these roles, but the main reason why 1
would like to sec this film is the story line Clon-
ing is the most resent science fiction to become
science fact, and I'm interested to seeing how 'Ins
film handles this subjcct matter
