From wiggling their toes
in marsh mud to harvesting
oysters from Galveston Bay
reefs, Sea Camp at Texas
A&M University at
Galveston (TAMUG) offers
students 10-18 years old
some of the most memorable
days of their lives.
Each year, hundreds of Sea
Camp kids come face-to-face
with endangered sea turtles,
trawl from a TAMUG
research ship, explore and
seine in coastal marshes and
meet some of the world's
most renowned marine
biologists. Along with this
adventure and fun comes a
better understanding of the
natural world and the reasons
we have to work to conserve
threatened marine resources. '
Kids from all over the
world have taken advantage
of the opportunity to learn
about (he ocean since Sea
Camp was founded at
TAMUG in 1986.
During the week-long
camp. Sea Campers live in
dormitories on the TAMUG
campus on Pelican Island.
Each day the young explorers
will investigate the rich
coastal habitat of Galveston
Bay while using scientific
sampling techniques to study
marine animals such as fish,
shrimp and crabs.
The camp 'Adventures in
Marine Biology' includes an
oyster ecology workshop
conducted by world-famous
oyster biologist and Sea
Camp Founder, Dr. Sammy
Rav. The experience gives
campers an up-close look at
where science and fishing
industry meet in the coastal
environment.
Campers also will tour the
Kemp's ridley sea turtle
research facility run by the

Service at Galveston.
Campers also will learn
about a variety of marine
mammals that inhabit the
Gulf of Mexico just off the
Texas coast. Campers will
identify birds and coastal
plants as they investigate
local beaches and beautiful
salt marshes.
As Sea Camp embarks on
its 25th season. Sea Camp
Developer Dr. Judy Wern
(retired) reminds us that
"There is no better way to
learn about a salt marsh than
to stand in it, listen to its
sounds, see its critters, feel
the soft muddy bottom and
smell its unique aroma."
After each exciting day in
the field. Sea Campers will
enjoy many fun activities
such as a beach cook-out,
sand sculpting contests, pool
and pizza parties and sunset
pier fishing.
Sea Camp is an experience
that enriches children's lives
forever. Nineteen different
camp topics and 43 sessions
are offered beginning June 6
and continuing through Aug.
7.
Each camp is geared to a
specific age group and
focuses on one of 19
different topics, such as
estuarine biology/ecology,
sea turtles, sharks,
oceanography, coastal
camping, marine mammals,
fish, careers, coastal
photography, veterinary
medicine, and much more.
The photography camp is
coordinated by a nationally
recognized photographer. A
marine science expedition to
Vancouver, Canada is also
being offered in August.
Sea Camp spaces are
limited and are filled on a
first-come, first-served basis.
The tuition for Sea Camp
depends on the camp you
choose and ranges from
$785-$2600. Scholarships
are available. Tuition
includes room board and
transportation during camps.
Public and private school
teachers can attend Texas-
based camps free by serving
as counselors. Teachers also
can receive a letter of
professional development
recognition (SBEC).
