London March Et. A young American
woman who volunteered for service ss I
Red Cross nurse In Servia two months ago
has written letters to friends In London
urging them against following her esain-
nle. unless Ihev are sure that their nerves
and physique ran stand the strain. "Many
of the volunteer nurses collapse arter a
week or two." she says "and the strong-
est of ui are quite certain that sse shall
have to give it up strer two or turen
months or else go mad.
"our hospital la not a large building
but we have 1.300 patients and have to
inspect 600 rregh cases each day. Ihe con-
gestion of the whole place Is so terrible
that major nceagtions frequently have to
be performed right In the wards with all
the other patients around.
"The hospital Is close to the railway and
men sent from the battlefields are brought
in to be dressed before continuing their
journeys to other towns. I call the dress-
lag room the hall of pain In It are nine
tables or agony and there are benches all
around on which sit the other men wait-
ing to have their wounds dressed.
"The hall throbs with cries groans and
shrieks of pain rising sometimes to a
crescendo tbat tho strongest nerves can-
not endure.
"We have seen none or the glory or war
only tne horror and suffering of the
soldier and . the civil population loo. But
I am sure no glory can compensate ror
all this. To see tne ravages rnituren anu
the wounded men and the surrerlng wom
en Is worse than any nightmare genius
could dream.
"I asked a man nearly cured when he
wag going home. 'I have no home' he
answered wearily 'my bouse was In sha-
bati; the enemy has destroyed It; my
wife and children are dead.' Alter the
name or Ihe place ror variety's sake ami
that Is tho answer you will get seven
times out of ten. One can only be silent
before such sorrow.
"I have been up to Belgrade for thrrn
daya to real my nerves. It Is a desolate
city. Normally there are iwnoo Inhabi-
tants; now there are about gooo returned.
I worried the authorities until I got per-
mission to visit the ..palace. The enemy's
guns had got the range of It very well.
Moreover an aviator's bomb had gone
through the roof of the library and wreck-
ed the library and throne room. The
chapel royal which had been made a sort
of headquarters ror the enemy's pillagers
was in an Indescribable stale of chaos
clothes china slurred birds pictures state
papers and thousands or other things were
littered about. In one corner was a col-
lection of unnumborrd bottles of all sorts
of medicine Tor the cure of rheumsttsm.
which the looters had brought rrom the
royal apartments the old king li a martyr
lo rheumatism and has apparently tried
everything that Is sold anywhere for II.
"II Is an interesting ran that in the
population of Servia men have always pre-
dominated considerably and even this
war. with Its hideous losses will only
balance the proportion of sesea."
