To Prize Fight
Finds society fans in silk hats and velvet
gowns wonderful picture at smelter
arena under mid-winter sun now Peggy's
a regular fight fan.'
I went to the prize rich! Sunday so that
I eouM write you about It and then I stum-
bled on to Ry Schneider's story In Monday
morning's paper and lost my courage.
I never never could ret so ram litar with
such words' as welterwstght leathery mitt
and this one the best of all lambasting.
llmb-unllmberlng Oh goodness! But It was
all true just the way be described It and
I rot terribly excited as Ihi- fight pro-
gressed and everyone began to lean for-
ward in their seats and applaud Johnny
Newton l think this was alonr about tne
tenth round I couldn't find anything- about
rounds in Hy's story but I'm sure that's
the word.
When I first arrived at the smeller rlnr
I thought t il made a mistake and. drirted
Into a band roturen th music waV splen-
did and there wore so many beauttrully
gowned women there with their husbands
dressed up In silk hats and walking sticks
that It looked like a real '.'social event."
During the preliminaries Jim Brown he's
the manager of these prize rights told nv-
or the first bouts I tried to count we
people I rot as far as 1589 soldiers ann
then I rot dizzy from looking: at so mucn
khaki and had in quit. The ticket man
said there- were about five hundred civil-
ians there with their wives and sweet-
hearts. Altogether r think there were about three
thousand people there.
I always had an Idea that prize flrbts
were hloody tilings and I had promised my-
self I'd never go to one but when Webb
Miller or the Untied Press; Robert Rhone
nl the New York Tribune; Norman Walker
of the Associated Press and Billy Gnfrin
or the Hearst service made a wager I Was
afraid to go t put my hat on tight away
and didn't lose any time getting out there.
And I've changed my mind about them
anyway the kind you seo at the smelter
ring. There's a whole lot more science to
boxing than brutality and It develops in
the boxer quick judgment alertness agility
and a remarkable resistance against patn.
There's going to be another prla? right

El Paso has been fortunate enough to
have a number of real musical attractions
appear here this season but the nppcfrmnl
ty does not come In many decades for a
southwestern city to hear such excellent
orchestral playing as was produced by the
Minneapolis Symphony orchestra under the
direction of Emil oberhoffer at the Texas
irand theater last night. And Kl Paso cer
tainly proved Itself to be a real music loving
city by the enthusiastic audience thai
crowded the theater. It was pleasing to
note mat the entire balcony and gallery
worn rilled as well as he lower rtnor.
Richard Czerwonky. violin soloist com
pletely captivated liis audience rrom the
ery beginning at Ms playing. So Intensely
virile and sincere In his playing so well pro-
portioned in his art he was the recipient of
prolonged uníanse fallowing his playing of
the concluding section of "Symphony E-
pagnole" by Lalo. In this entire group the
violinist showed such skillful knowledge of
which was marked with exceptional
brill lunry or technlqae and pure" tone pro-
duction. The audience was quiet greedy In
the way it kept calling Caer wonky back
with Inlensirieil cries rrom the gallery. The
violinist acquiesced and delivered an en
corebut still the audience was like a hun-
gry dog who wants all the meat on the
bone. They kept applauding hut Ctorwon-
ky only smiled sweetly at them and" bowed.
And that is one distinctly human thing about
the violinist he has a distinctly human
and charming smile.
To watch Oberhoffer dlrectlnr the Orches-
a or eighty-five musirían to- be 'con
scious or the wonderful concentration of the
musicians lo see them absolutely under his
mamiPlle control to hoar such glorious
bursts or "God's divine harmony or sound"
IS well. It Is enough lo cause one to reel
of music what Carlyte said of It "A kind
or inarticulate unfathomable speech which
leads us to the edge or the Infinite and lets
us Tor a moment gaze Into that."
The third movement In Tschalkowsky's
Symphony NO. 4 In P minor. Op. 3 the one
In which the musicians use their ringers
Instead or the bow. keyed the audience to
tip-toe enthusiasm. The delicate ralry
movements like gnomes playing hide and
seek In a deep beautiful forest were ban-
died with extraordinary skill and tempera - '
tnent by the entire urrlysstra. The Orches-
tra ti equally as good In the light deli-
cate selections as In the heavier ones. From

OberhofTer and his musician proved them-
selves to be uritisually versatile.
The Minneapolis Symphony orchestra Is
said to be one or the. few orchestras outside
of New York who braved that city arid'
made them sit up asjL take notice.
Two perronnanens will be presented at
the Texas Grand theater today by the Min
neapolis Symphony orrnestra. This etter-
noon at 2:30 they will appear with Cornelius
Van Vllet. -'cellist and soloist. Van Vllet
Is conceded to be one of the world's great
cello masters.
This evening at 9:18 o'clock Mis Margue
rite Buckler a former El Paso girl who has
won much success in grand opera will be
soprano soloist for the orchestra In their
evening presentation. Everyone Is looking
forward with Interest to hear this El Paso
miislral product who lias won so enviable
apposition In the musical world. Miss Buck
ler will sing arias rrom Wagner and selec
tions from the opera "I Pagllarcl" and from
