Social Security
EDIITOR'S NOTE: This
is one in a series of
articles giving the pertin-
ent details of the new
provisions in Social Sec-
urity, written by R. R.
Tuley, Jr., District Mana-
ger.
In my previous article I
discussed the increased soc-
ial security payments that
would be coming to persons
now on the social security
benefit rolls in early March.
The new legislation also
increases the benefits of all
future beneficiaries at least
13 percent.
Thus for these workers
who have been earning and
who will continue to earn
wages of $6600 a year or
less, the new amendments
will mean sizable increases
in their furure benefit pay-
ments — *?nd without com-
parable increases in the so-
cial security tax contribu-
tions they were scheduled
to pay under the old law.
A worker earning $6600 a
year will pay exactly the
same amount of social se-
curity taxes, including
Medicare costs, in 1968 as
he paid in 1967. In 1969 and
1970, he will actually pay
$6.60 less for the year than
he would have paid under
the old law. In years after
that he will pay only slight-
ly more, with his maximum
contribution no more than
$1.38 more a month than he
would have paid under the
law as it stood before the
enactment of the benefit in-
creases.
Beginning with 1968, ear-
nines up to $7800 a year
will be subject to social
spcuritv contributions and
will also count toward soc-
ial socuritv benefits.
For a worker earning the
maximum of $7R00 or more
^ vear. this will mean ad-
ditional social security con-
tributions of $4.40 more per
month in 1968, rising to a
maximum additional con-
tribution of $7.28 per month
in 1987 and later, including
the amount he pays for his
and his wife's hospital in-
surance under Medicare.
These higher paid work-
ers who will be paying sub-
stantially more in social se-
curity contributions are,
however, the ones who
will also get substantially
higher benefits, ranging up
to 30 percent higher than
under present law.
For example, a young
man now 27 or younger
who pays social security
contributions on $7800 a
year until his retirement at
age 65, will collect 30 per-
cent more ;n monthly bene-
fits than he would under
present lav/—$218 a month
for himself —$323 a month
for himself and his wife.
His family's benefit pro-
tection in case of his dis-
ability or death is also sub-
stantially improved.
Even the higher paid
middle-aged worker who is
much closer to retirement
age will find his benefit
prospects greatly improved.
For example, a worker who
is 50 in 1963 and will pay
social security contribu-
tions on earnings of $7800 a
year for only 15 years will
collect a retirement, benefit
of $188.80. This compares
with the 1ft 155 per month he
would have collected under
the old law, an increase of
21.8 percent. He and his
wife together will be eligi-
ble for $283.20 a month, in-
stead of $232.50.
