ASPERMONT WINS
STATE IN CLASS A
The Aspermont Hornets
are Number One in the
State in Class A Basketball,
winning thai honor by de-
bating two teams in the
State Schoolboy Basketball
Playoffs in Austin this past
weekend.
They defeated West Sa-
1 ine in their first game
Thursday morning by a
score of 03-62 in overtime
Thr>v won the playoff
Saturday night 52-50 over
the Louise Hornets.
Louise's Rudy Ochoa
called time out with two
seconds left and the score
knotted, 50-50. And the fans
prepared for the expected
overtime period in Gregory
Gym Saturday night.
But when Ochoa threw
the ba1! inbounds, Asper-
mont's Jimmy Parker inter-
cepted and dribbled in for
an easy lavup at the buzzer.
A short silence was inter-
rupted by whoops and hol-
lers, when the Aspermont
fans realized that their
team had whipped the
Louise Hornets by a scant
field goal, 52-50, for the
state Class A schoolboy bas-
ketball title.
The win gave Aspermont
a 28-5 season mark. Louise
fe'l to a 24-6 mark.

game, Mike Samford sank

permont ahead, 8-7, with
4:23 left in the opening
quarter. The winning Hor-
nets then held the upper
hand until Mark Brezina of
Louise hit for two and the
lead, 49-48, with 1:10 re-
maining in thr game.
Then the tough 6-2 Bre-
zina stole a pass from As-
permont's Ervin Jones and
called time with 0:57 left.
Going into a delay, Louise's
Frank Marek was tripped
up by Samford and receiv-
ed two free throws. That
was Samford's fifth and he
was replaced by Eddie
Rash.
Eddie Jackson then mis-
sed a shot, but Nathan Ray
grabbed the rebound and
was fouled by Tony Benich.
Ray made the first of his
two shots to close the gap
to 50-49 with only 0:13 left.
He missed the second free
throw, but teammate
Rash took the rebound and
was immediately fouled by
Brezina.
Rash Tios it Up
That finished Brezina as
ho left the game with 0:12
showing. With the pressure
on, Rash sank the first of a
one-and-one shot to tie the
score at 50-50, but he missed
the second. However, the
rebound came back to Rash
and he tried again without
success.
This time, Louise's Rudy
Ochoa took the carrom
and called the fatal time out
with 0:02 showing
Coach Terry Priest ex-
plained that he didn't really
call anything like the in-
terception during timeout.
"We just told them to play
it man-for-man. Don't give
up anything easy and don't
"oul."
Louise's Brezina, who de-
parted near the end, was
the game's high scorer with
29 points. Aspermont's
Jackson had 20. and team-
mates Sam Lord and Nathan
Mayor Proclaims
Hornet Week
Jim Ward, mayor of As-
permont has proclaimed the
week of March 18 as Hor-
net Week in honor of the
Class A State Champion
Basketball team. He also
announced that the city
will have State Champs let-
tered on !he top of the
water tower.
Ray had 10 apiece.
Other Aspermont scorers
were Parker 5; Jones 6, and
Rash 1.
Aspermont ran up eight-
point margins twice in the
first half at 17-9 and 19-11,
then toolj^ a 24-ID lead into
intermiss^ i. In the second
half, the inning Hornets
ran the advantage p to 10
points at 35-25 a> • Louise
had narrowed ie gap
slightly to four points early
in the third period.
But the rallying Louise
Hornets out.scored the win-
ners, 17-6 in an eight-min-
ute span to gain a 42-42 tie
on Benich's driving .layup
with 3:20 lei.f in the contest.
The turnover battle was
fairly even with 16 for
Loui e and 15 foi Asper-
mont. Both teams fired in
17 of 46 field goal attempts
for an even 37.0 percentage.
The Class A champs hit 18
of 35 free throws for 51.4
percent, while the losers
made 16 of 28 for 57.1 per-
cent.
Aspermom-West Sabine
Aspermont's Hornets frus-
trated at the free throw line
for four quarters, came up
\vi:h three fou' shots in the
las! ha1!' of an overtime to
upset West Sabine. 63-62.
West Sabine s Tigers
penetrated Aspermont's us-
ually tough defense for two
nine-point leads early in
the second half only to hit
a dry spell in which the
East Texans went five min-
u1< s and 48 seconds without
getting a field goal.
The Hornets took ad van-
t"u'o of tnis lull to pull
\ ithin three points, 44-41,
at the three-quarter mark
and went ahead 47-46 with
2:36 gone in the fourth per-
iod.

Sabine had held the upper
hand since taking a 7-6 lead
early in the game and then

Nathan Ray and team-
mate Eddie Jackson made
the all tournament team at
Austin this past weekend.
Others making the team
were Harry Ilugheo of West
Sabine, Mark Brezina of
