TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL.
FLASHES OF THOUGHT.
BY PROFESSOR D. S. LANDIS.
Love is the sea of life at flood-tide.
Who gives not his life the best is a robber.
God answers neither the fool nor the savant.
Revelation is the unfolding of the living soul.
Each little town has a Chinese wall around it.
Skepticism is a venturesome sort Of romance.
Ño man knows himself until he talks with two
others.
Best thoughts seldom come by the wisdom-clad
avenues.
. • :■ Hi . [I :
Nature meets our learning with many a sneer
and laugh.
Who utters a new truth starts a thrill through
all the world. * / , .1
Every man misconstrues his mission the mo-
riaent he becomes a critic.
Some Christian folks carry private riddles into
their churches for solution.
The sword shall let out of the blood of Fr&nce
the injustice to Dreyfus, the Jew.
The soul is a mystery that dwells alone on the
outposts of time betweed the flown and the un-
born.
Hope is the name of a youth whose locks are
forever golden, neither will they grow gray nor
waste away.
OVER THE RIVER.
The leaves are falling by twos and threes,
All yellow, ánd gold, and brown.;
And thoughts untold are mingled with these,
Over the river with bridges all down.
The leaves are falling by fives and ten;
I would that summer return,
For lamps all lit in the paths of men,
Flare in my heart, and there redden and burn.
The leaves have fallen, and skies are gray,
And winds are chasing my dead—
O life, your gifts are born of a day,
Burnt in the embers of passion till dead.
0 where shall I read the tintings again,
All scarlet, and gold and brown?
Once more will they tell the story of men,
Over the river with bridges all down?
IN VAIN.
In vain we ask the morrow's bread,
And wait with sickles bright and keen;
Today the fields are golden spread,
Tomorrow's gift is waving green.
In vain we smite the desert stone,
Or Bable towers crowd the day;
Each moment sped becomes a throne
To lift above some baser clay.
In vain we tread the wine-press rife,
Or search the hills of purpling vine;
Today is all, lay hold of life,
Its cup is dripping red with wine.
Read in today's issue what Mr. Best has to say
about Groceries and prices. He has studied your
needs for the holidays.
