Heroes chosen as theme
for 2004 Charity Week
by Katie Scharber
Assistant News Editor
Charity Week, a UD tradition,
is in the final stages of preparation
this week. Junior event chairs
Katherine Wolfe and Jennifer
Hoitsma hope to bring a new
height of enthusiasm to the annual
event.
This year, the theme, Heroes,
will be integrated into the events
as much as possible. For each
day of Charity Week, there is
a costume theme having tCi do
with heroes; and prizes will be
awarded for best costume. Wolfe
urges students to have fun and
participate by wearing costumes.
Hoitsma hopes the generosity
of students and professors will
allow them to collect even more
money than last year.
"We're trying to infuse Charity
Week with a spirit of charity, a
very lively spirit of charity," she
said.
The charities to receive proceeds
from Charity Week are the Low
Birth Weight Clinic, the White
Rose Clinic, the Missionaries of
Charity, and The Least Among
Us.
"UD is not a bubble. We're a
part of the world. As Christians
we're called to service,® Wolfe
said.
Of course, Charity Week is
not all about the money. A prayer

Pro-life Catholic Democrat
defends his political stance
by Erin Cooley
Contributing Writer
A person's choice of political
alignment does not "make anyone
less Catholic or more Catholic,"
nor does it guarantee an impact
on such issues as a pro-life view,
the war in Iraq, or gay marriage,
Dr. John Norris, associate
theology professor, said at UD
last Tuesday.
In a speech titled I'm Catholic,
I'm Pro-life, I'm a Democrat, Norris
said voters should make use of
the guidance of the Church, but
most importantly, should rely
on
th
eir own conscience anc
understanding in making political
decisions.
Norris spoke at the first
Dinner & Discourse event of this
academic year, addressing a room
so crowded that many ended up
standing or sitting on the floor.
He began by saying no one could
say his or her opinion is the only
acceptable one. Thus, Catholics
should not feel compelled to vote
according to what the Church
prescribes simply because the
Church represents only one
viewpoint.
This is not to say the Catholic

Denominators dominate in 2004 College Bowl
by Nancy George
Contributing Writer
Three nights of College Bowl
culminated in the final battle
between the two undefeated
teams —The Denominators, led
by junior Barry A. McCain, and
The Team Whose Members Can
Bench Press Their Respective
Weights... Seriously, led by senior
Adam Cherry. (The latter team
will henceforth be referred to as
the Bench Pressers.)
College Bowl is a "giant trivia
fest," senior Bryan Esposito,
chairman of Academic Forum and
organizer of College Bowl, said.
Junior Rebecca Burgess, a team
member of Frame-Up Artist,
described the competition as "a
blood-pounding" battle of the
minds.
One of the rewards competitors
hope for is "glory among peers,"
Esposito said.
Each game consists of two
rounds. The team that wins at
least two of three possible games
wins the championship.
Minutes before the competition
began, The Bench Pressers
put their hands together and
"silent[ly] yelled," to show off
their pride and unity without
disturbing the classes going on
nearby. Along with their "silent
yell," team members danced, or to
be more accurate, wildly jumped
around to music, expressing their

enthusiasm and readiness to take
on the competition.
On the other hand, the
Denominators, as McCain said,
"came into the match confident,
perhaps overconfident," but
"pretty tense."
Striking first, the Bench
Pressers correctly answered the
first question and led their way
to victory in the first round of the
first game.
Denominator McCain said,
"The anxiety definitely worked
against us in the first match."
Despite the heavy
disappointment, the
Denominators returned from
the break determined to achieve
victory and much calmer, which
was crucial for their upcoming
