English professor mentors
new American immigrants
Using e-mail, riding a bus,
or writing a check are some of
the daily occurrences that seem
natural and easy for those who
have grown up in the United
States.
But for immigrants to the
United States, these simple
tasks are foreign. The St.
Vincent DePaul Society at Holy
Trinity Parish has established a
14-week training program to
help these individuals adjust
to American lifestyles.
Immigrants from Mexico,
Burma, Africa, and other
countries have been assigned
mentors to help them with
adjustment to various aspects
of the American work ethic and
daily living etiquette.
The 30 participants work
Wednesday evenings and
Saturday mornings with their
individual mentors, including
Dr. Bernadette Waterman-Ward,
English professor at the University
of Dallas, to study the English
language, train in basic computer
usage, and learn the basic code of
conduct and communications for
the American work force.
In addition, several lawyers

assist those immigrants who have
not yet applied for United States
work permits and citizenship.
This program welcomes
immigrants to the United States
and provides them with the
education they need to survive
and remain viable members of the
work force.
"We are really giving to
them in a Christ-like way,"
Waterman-Ward said.
The St. Vincent de Paul
Society invites University of
Dallas students to become
a part of this experience by
offering their skills to help these
immigrants.
If any students have
computer skills or can speak
a foreign language, their time
would be useful and greatly
appreciated.
All are welcome to join
Waterman-Ward and various
others in assisting those who
need help.

current and upcoming projects
