the 2002 incoming freshmen,
Tull said.
SAT scores are historically
closely linked with retention.
"The SAT predicts the first se-
mester GPA, and the best predic-
tion of eventual graduation is the
first semester GPA," said Eley,
cautioning that "there are excep-
tions; there is no single number
that predicts success; we can only
predict group behavior," not
individual.
Tull said freshmen retention
from last year was 85.2%, com-
pared with 86% the previous year.
Retention of all eligible under-
graduate students from the spring
of 2005 to the current fall semes-
ter was 91%, with no change from
91% for the previous year.
The enrollment of 29 students
from Louisiana universities af-
fected by hurricane Katrina also
added to the tuition revenue this
year. However,; "we have to sort
through ... the logistics of tuition
at Tulane [and other universities
to find whether] we will collect
that tuition or not," Galecke said.
Such factors will not be definitive-
ly incorporated into the budget
until January or February.
Lazarus said the university is
applying for two government
grants. The FIPSE grant (or
Fund for the Improvement of
Post-Secondary Education) is
awarded by the U.S. Department
of Education and would be for the
sum of $1 million. This would go
into the operating budget of the
university, Lazarus said. A $.5
million grant from the U.S. De-
partment ofTransportation would
be used in the capital budget for
improvement projects like finish-
ing the roadways on campus and
providing better security at the
gates, he said.
"There are no guarantees on
either one [of the grants]," said
Lazarus, adding that final al-
location of federal grants would
probably not be determined for
several weeks.
The development program
has a goal of raising $1.3 million
for its annual fund, or 3% of the
university's $36 million operating
budget, said Lazarus.
The annual fund has five
primary sources of donations:
alumni, trustees, faculty and
staff, "friends," and corporations
and foundations, said Dr. Daniel
Henry, vice president of university
advancement. Each source has a
specific goal.
"The goal for trustees is
$480,000 this year," he said.
"They give every year, so [in es-
tablishing a goal] we look at their
historical giving" and ask for a
little bit more.
Henry said their strategic plan
is not dramatic. The Office of
Advancement hopes to increase
the participation of alumni, to
spend more time cultivating rela-
tions with various corporations,
and to find more new "friends,"
or "people who love us and what
we do," he said.
"We're really trying to build
relationships" founded on a pas-
sion for the university and a sense
of stewardship that encourages a
"giving back of God's 'pure gift'
to us," he said. "That's what will
pay off in the long run."
