The severest wind, hall and rain atorm
that ever vlaited tlita section patwl over
portions ot Bast rop county Saturday night
laat, beginning twlween sever, and eight
o'clock and lasted about t«o hour*.
In the town of Bastrop the atorm *as
not ao severe as in other portions ol llie
county, the like of which, however, our
people are not very anxious to wltneaa re-
peated again aoon. Here, there were no
housea blown down, nor was any one se-
riously hurt, though several were conside-
rably brulaed.br being struck with heavy
pleoee ot tea, the atones ol which are vari-
ously estimated In slee from a hen's egg to
six pounds In weight. Ur. Slarcke, teeing
a two pounder tail In his yard, went nut
to get It and while picking It up had hta
shouider graaed by • flve-|Kiunder.
One atone struck tbe roof ol Trigg A
Erhard's gallery, passing through tbe
thick eorruguatcd Iron and one inch plank
making a large hole; another went through
tbe nortb aide of Kobt. Gill's store house ;
another went through tbe side ol UeorgP
F. Hannay's house,making a hole large
enough tor a cat to crawl through, another
passed through the rool of T. C, Cain's
dining loom, breaking Into several
pieces, out piece, about the slie of a
hen's egg, brushing his little girl's head
and striking the table by the plate from
which the waa eating; another went
through the thick rooting of tlie gallery in
front ol the Bon Ton saloon, and a tre-
mendously h>rge one passed through the
roof of a shed In the rear ot P. O. Elmer's
store, the roof of K. A. Ureen's residence
was perferated with stones, and many
other places similarly struck. The Meth-
odist church Ih'II was blown down, but for-
tunately was not damaged.
Before night the dark cloud*, apparently
as black its midnight, and lined with crim-
son red, began gathering In the north,
north-east and north-west, all of which
seemed to Join together immediately north
of Bastrop county, and finally separating,
one branch going In a soul ii westerly di-
rection, over Elgin. in Bastrop county and
Manor in Travis county, passing along
through tbe Oatmnn neighborhood, in the
western portion 'iftiie county.on through
the t>dar Creek and Red Rock neighbor-
hoods, and oil by Cittern, in Fayrtte
count v, doing gieut damage lulls wake.
At
it loin
the wind, tain nnd hall was ycry severe,
the hail perfcrntlng ami Injuring every log-
in (lie Iowa, and smashlug all the windows
on the north tides of houses, in some in-
ntanees demolishing hllmls, sash and giant,
The Mcllin list church was blown from Its
foundation, leaving the building almost a
pel feet w rick. Stock were killed ai d the
crops in tlie vicinity greatly damaged.
The hail atones or blocks, are variously
estimated in si/.e from a hen's egg to seven
pound in weif-tiTr ?<t>Tyrrr'^. iiunw'Wfi*1
hadfr bruised h) being ifliilfk with icy
'missies, among I hern Mr. John Smith, who
was severely hurt.
In the
oatmav nkiuiiihihiiool)
great damage w as done, houses unroofed,
trees blown down, corn badly damaged
and on many farms, cotton snipped The
injury to crops In this neighborhood Is re-
ported immense.
In the vi-lnlty of
Crt>All (,'RKKK
several farms reported ruined, to far ns
growing crops are concerned, Peter Yoast
and FrankLltlou greatly suffering In crops
and property.
At
iikii hock,
the wind assumed a petfect gale, destroy-
ing bouses and crops and killing slock.
The Masonic building is reported almost a
complete wreck, and it Is feared will have
lolte torn down and rebuilt; at any rate,
•vlll cost four or live hundred dollars to re-
place and repair It.
The storm continued on through
lUsritit.N,
In Fsvette eovnty. anil lor half a mile ie
w idth, the tree* left standing are sul'J to
bavs been completely snipped of their
leaven.
Such n storm, as ttin? c-f Saturday night,
was never know n In this tec'ion and not.
tlml the danger is all over, it is limiting
to hear ol persons so su hleniy brought to
think ot « od and hit saving ami protecting
pewer. Many persons, who hid long
since forgotten the Lord'* prayer, we
are fold, continuously cried out, In their
fctr, "Now I lay me down to sleep " etc..
or "Lord, what shall I do to be saved."
In fact, the times we« "ijuull/, and those
who passed through the fiercest of the
blustery ordeai, would believe almost any
talc that might he loUl.
A colored preacher. Rev. Sam Fowler,
tells 11, that he had often heard that Cbri*-
tlaiin could not be scared, that notwith-
standing be was a preacher, be first tried
to get under tho lied, hut It being too low,
he seized a chair aud getting under It,
prayed lustily for protection againtt the
hall atones and tlrong wind. One little
teven year old girl, whote older sister was
much frightened, said to her, "sister, don't
cry: IIII kills one It will klllall of us, and
we will all go together."
You can easily make a man living on tbe
line ol Saturday night's sloriu, lielleve that
stones tell as large as a flower batrel. In
fact, Mulhatton could reap a rich harvest
of believers in this section, on any tale
be might tell.

Your kind favors of recent dute asking
that I become a candidate (or Representa-
tive received my most serious considera-
tion. The duties of him who legislates
lor interest* so vast and so complicated III
their relation* as those ol our great
State nre made g,rave. At this juncture
they ate especially so, great questions,
some tbe most difficult known to political
sclenoe, have come up for flnsl disposition
These issues have been long deferred. Tbe
people demand a final settlement. They
demand that the make-shitt legislation of
the past eliflit years be supplanted by
measures at once radical In tbe nature and
permanent in their re«ults. These consid-
erations have led me to hesitate long be-
fore becoming a candidate tor a position
to grave In tbe responsibilities which It
imposes, ('all*, however, coming from
those wlioae opinions I to highly respect,

now agitating the public mind. Tliunk-
