Audy knew that there waa teacoely

steered the Alfratta steadily on, deter-
mined to save Dick or perish with
him.
Meanwhile the Klf encountered some
rough ice und fell a little liehlml This
made Andy's chances brighter. The
next minute was full of horror uud
suspense The two icelsiuts rushed
madly on, one headed atra;ght for the
uir holes, the other striving to cr<ai*
ubove it. Ihck suw the peril now, aud
hia shrill cries echoed far on the air.
Andy waved his hatul cheerily. He
could s/*c moving hluck specks over on
the Port Trcverton shore.
Now the gap of ynw uiug-black water
was just ulicud. Nearer aud nearer
swept the Klf *'loser ami doner came
the Alfratta. Thesideaof the triangle
were rapidly dwiudlitig to a point.
Andy felt his heart rising to his tiiroat.
He scanned the distance between the
two bouts und thought that he saw a
gleam of ho|>e.
"Dick," he shouted with all his
might, "cruwl, up fount* He ready for
tue. If I iium jump off. Do you utidcr*
stard?"
Dick nodded. Then he quickly
obeyed orders. Now the critical im>-
uient was at bund. At u distance of
only twenty feet from the brink of the
air hole the Alfratta dashed obliquely
acroaa the bow of the Klf. There waa
a crash and a quiver, and that quickly
Andy snatehed little Dick ami drugged
him from hia place of peril.
The Klf swung alsiut, and grouud
swiftly on. She plunged into the
black water, and was tucked down by
the swift current. The sails floated
for a moment and then disappeared.
The Alfratta barely cleared the fur-
thermost edge of the ulr-hole. She
tacked rapidly acroaa the river with
her double burden, und five minutes
after she ground safely on the Port
Trcverton shore, a mile und a half be-
low the village. Most of the crowd
were on the Spot, having ruu swiftly
along the bank. There was great
cheering and applause, and Andy
blushed to tiud himself a hero. Phil
burst into tears when little Dick
j umjveil Into his arms. Later on he
('egged Andy's forgiveness, as did alao
Jack and I rank.
"There's nothing to forgive," said
Andy. "I'm only sorry the Klf ia lost.
