grown in his garden, of good size for

thinks the yield will be large.

citizens, anil especially gratifying to
the candidates. Our sister town of
Smithville should do likewise. Kvery
thing moved along quietly, while the
candidate had nothing to do but
await the counting of the vote, at
the close of the polls, in the after-
noon, w hile his pocket book was us
heavy at the end of the day as it
was at the beginning. The "two-
bit" voter and the "llooence" man
was not in it, at all. The colored
vote, generally numbering over 200,
was only I-', by actual count. At
the last city election, April of last
years, there being two candidates
for Mayor, the vote was something
over 100, while at the general elec-
tion in November, the vote was 7.
In this election Tuesday, there was
but one ticket, and witli no opposi-
tion, there was nothing to bring out
the vote, liastrop has started the ball
moving, the good effcc's of which
have proven very beneficial. I he
same can be extended over the
county, if the good citizens of the
different neighborhoods throughout
the county, will only join in and all
pull together. Let the good work
begin at once. Organize! Organize!
Organize! Stand together, pull to-
gether, let the pull be strong and
vigorous, and the result is certain.
This thing of bleeding candidates,
forcing them to pay out one year's
salary of the olllce, to get it, should
be stopped.
— lion. .J. I*. Fowler tells lis of a
distressing and very near fatal acci-
dent that happened to his nephew,
Percy Fowler, a l.Vycar old son of
the late Dr. W. S. Fowler, at the
farm, west of liastrop, on Tuesdav,
last. He had roped a young mule,
and stepping up to its head, turned
the rope loose to bridle him. when
the mule suddenly sprang back and
started off in a run. I nfort unati ly,

mangled condition, was loosened
from the rope and taken in the
house, where every attention was
given him. His injuries are not
thought to be fatal, lie had hardly
been carried in the house and laid
on the bed, before tin mule, which
had only been stunned, sprang up
and ran off. Hal the shot been a
moment later, the mule would have
passed into a big pasture, and the
fate of Percy Fowler would have
been sealed.
Manager llatehctt carried his

engaged with the Austin league team
in a spin ar umi the diamond. As
was expected, the boys got ever
lastingly snowed under. It could
not have been otherwise, and while
many really expected liastrop to
defeat the league team, we didn't.
There was no organization, while the
boys were completely wit limit prac-
tice. On the Austin diamond was
their first, playing together for this
season. The secretary of the Austin
league promised liastrop practice In
fast company, and our boys say
they got it.
