Sherman, (iagc ami Alger, of Mo
Kinley'a cabinet, are millionaires,
ami all the others are reported to be
"mighty well fixed."
Says the Express: The reports

that Attorney General Crane's fer-

Every enlisted man on the cruiser

the Maine disaster. The other vessels
of the fleet will probably do the
same, and the aggregate amount will
be very large.
An exchange speaks with truth:
You cannot make too much cotton if
you make ample supplies of meat,
corn ami hay, and raise your own
plow stock. Hut if you have to pay
for these essentials out of the cotton
money, ten cents a pound will not
carry you through.
There was never more truth written
in the same number of words: "As

them at the first fire.

H'.w M^jor Bayers Appointed One Clark
it* and Goldbug out of Fifty-fiTs,
and Own. Crane Appoint-
ed One Out of Six.
1 lie ratio of Iti to I has been h
popular one for a great while with
all the "clever fellers" who wanted
to hold office, and it has been preach- j
od from one end of the country to
the other. Hut a brand new ratio
| lias been biought to light by the sup-
| porters of General Crane (and not to
the special credit of that gentleman)
who have been assidiously circulat-
ing the story of Major Savers' re-
commending four Clarkites to feder-
al appointments. Indeed the official
L'rauc circular says : "Major Savers j
lias appointed bolters tocfflce, might |
lie not do it again?" The facts are'
that out of '.'20 reooinmedations made |
l>y Major Sayers for federal places,
four of them were old comrades in
arms (Confederate soldiers), who
were warm personal friends of the
Major, but. h%d -sinned" in the eyes
of the Crane head director of the
band wagon by supporting George
Clark and being bold enough to think
for themselves and favor the gold
standard theory of the monetary sys-
tem in this country. This was an
average of "one sinner" out of fifty-
live. Hut let us see the other side
of this question.
The attorney general's department
contains six persons; when Mr.
Ciane was elected attorney general,
I.e gave the best place at his dispos-
al, first office assistant attorney gen-
eral, to II. I'. Brown, a rabid, un-
compromising Clarkitc and goldbug.
The Austin Daily Statesman, of
Sunday, October .10, lH'jf, in re-
porting the big Clark demonstration
at the darn in Austin, says that the
principal speaker was this same H.
1*. Brown, and describes him as one
of the few men who had been nomi-
nated at the Lampasas convention as
a presidential elector, who had after
the Houston convention repudiated
the alleged democratic platform in
lloggism, ami recognised George
(Murk as the true democrat. It goes
on to state that his arraignment of
the platform was thorough, and pre-
dict tin overwhelming victory for
Clark. He was followed by Seth
Shepard and three negro orators,
Stokes, Mabson and Black.
What ought the democrats of Tex-
us to think of a candidate who in his
campaign circulars will attack another
candidate for doi..0 smething which
he himself has been guilty of in a
greater degree? Where Sayers re-
commended one Clark man in 55,
Crane appointed one in six, and he
had no excuse that he was a comrade
in arms, or that there was no other
available material. There were num-
erous good lawyers who followed the
fortunes of J. S. Hogg, who would
gladly have accepted the position
which Mr. Crane gave to Brown, the
boltocrat, Clarkite and goldbug.
Now, in fairness, don't this ratio
strike the reader as rather favorable
to Major Sayers? As one "sinner"
is to fifty-five, so in greater degree
is one to six. With Col. S. Kasy
Moss, the goldbug, national banker
Clarkite, at the head of the proces-
sion, and General Crane's favorite
appointee, II. 1'. Brown, thu "chief
of sinners," boltocrat directing the
Craue procession, how in the name
of the world can they "cast the first
stone?" The mud slinging, alar der
wagon gang will have to hunt a new
theme.

The Racket is Ready for You
Mississippians will read with sor-
row of the death of Col. Matt. C.
Galloway, which occurred in Mem-
phis, Tenn., on the night of March
1st, 189H, in the 7Nth year of his age.
The Aberdeen (Miss.) Examiner,
says of Col. Galloway: For years
he was an honored citizen of Aber-
deen, Miss., and its leading editor
ia the days when John Vesey, Giles
M. Hillyer, Win. H. Yasser and
other brilliant journalists contributed
to the influence and renown of our
local press. Going hence to Mem-
phis to establish the Daily Avalanche
he found in that wider field a national
reputation, and shared with Geo. D.
I'rentiss 1'arson Hrownlowc, and a
few other notable spirits, the shu| -
ing and directing of public opinion
aud sentiment in the southwest.

VOTED AGAINST SILVER.
A hill has been introduced in the
Kentucky legislature making it "un-
lawful for any person to fire or dis-
charge at rnndom any deadly weapon,
whether loaded or unloaded." While
the words loaded or unloaded might
imply ignorance of phraseology, they
may he wiser than appears on the
surface, for they har the plea of
"didn't know it was loaded."—(Kx-
i hange.) Kentucky reformers also
expect to prohibit cigarette smoking
aud whisky drinking.

In 1892 General Crane Voted Against
A Silver Resolution in the
State 8enate.
I fie friends of General Crane who
have been making so much fuss
about his record as a silver advocate
are not as well posted on that gentle-
man's record on this important ques-
tion as is the Tribune. In 1^1*2 he
persistently voted against a resol
tion in the State SenaLe "to secure
passage of a bill for the free and un-
limited coinage of silver" at the then
sittiug session of Congress and voted
for the amendment declaring "that
we regard the reduction of the tariff
as the paramount issue before the
American people." He also voted
for Koger Q. Mills as against Hon.
Horace Chilton, Governor Hogg's
appointee for United States Senator.
These are facts and the "outriders"
dare not deny it.—Temple Tribune.

much loved by the little people.
