The first iron war vessel built
in the world was the I *nitet1 States
steamship Mich;gan, which is still
on duty on the Great Lakes, and
has often been seen in Chicago.
San Antonio iH already out for
that recruiting depot, and promi-
nent citizens have asked our Con-
gressman and Senator to do every-
thing possible to secure it. A
regiment of Texans, it is believed,
will be recuited and San Antonio,
of course, wants that regiment
recruited there.—Bartlett News.
Judge Tod, the new Secretary
of State, is a native Texan. He
was born in Fort Bend county on
the 14th day of January, 1864.
He is an able lawyer anil a ripe
scholar, queit and unassuming in
his manners; prompt, firm and
energetic in the discharge of duty
in business affairs. — Brenham
Banner.
Two companies have already
been organized at Palestine and
will at once begin to bore for oil.
How much of Texas will eventu-
ally be dug and torn up in the
wild hunt for oil, coal, gold, silver
and other precious things, re-
mains to be seen. This is an age
of investigation truly. — Tyler
Democrat- Reporter.
Another new rifle has been in-
vented, this time in Sweden, and
England has placed orders for
some samples. It is an automat-
ic contrivance, which is said to
mean a revolution of tho whole
system of rifle shooting. Ger-
many has sent some gun barrels
to Sweden to have tho new inven-
tion fitted to them.
According to I'nited States
Treasurer Roberts, cents and nick-
els are now Ix'ing used to a much
greater extent than ever before.
As illustrating the cumulative
force of the 5c piece it is shown
that, the total income of the nine-

A YOUNG KNIGHT TEMPLAK.
Our young friend, Simmie Bin-
lock, was a visitor to lluntsville
this week, coming to visit his
father, Mr. W. B. Blalock, as also
take the Knight Templar degree
in Trinity Commandery No. 20.
This makes Simmie probably the
youngest K. T. in Texas, if not in
tho United States. He was 21
years old on May 28th, 15)00, and
was made a master Mason in Joe
Werner Lodge No. 553, Trinity,
on December 15th, his father con-
ferring the degree upon him. His
a pplication was immediately made
to Saron Chapter No. 183, and he
received the degree of a Royal
Arch Mason, as well as a Royal
and select Master, during the first
week of this month, the degrees
being conferred by W. J. Swain,
who was lectured to Saron Chap-
ter at that time. He made ap-
plication to Trinity Commandery
No. 29, Huntsville, and by special
dispensation of Most Eminent
Grand Commander Howard re-
ceives the Commandery degrees.
Special dispensalion was granted
on account of Simmie expecting
to leave the State, as ho has re-
signed his position with Cameron
A Co., with whom ho has been for
the last 30 months, and will accept
a position with the Kent Lumber
Co. of Kentwood, La., and take
charge of their office and books
on February 1st.—Huntsville
