Last Thursday night a Mexi-
can coal digger at the Independ
ence coal mine three miles north
I of here was shot and died from
(the effects of his wound. Before
I dying he gave the name of his
slayer as Pedro Ortal, who fled
immediately after the shooting.
There were no eye witnesses to
the tragedy, but it seems that in
afternoon a difficulty occurred
between the two, and it is sup-
posed that they met that night
in front of the beer saloon after
it had closed and the shooting
took place.
Officers searched diligently that
night and the next day for Ortal,
and succeeded in having him
captured late Friday by Blake
Manor at his store near Webber-
ville, when the officers were just
behind him. He was brought to
town Saturday by Constable Gus
Wallace and lodged in jail.

The lldiiston Daily Post hii^
the following to say of Bas-
trop county's sheriff:
Woody Towusend, slit-iifT of
Bartrop county, was in H« u«-
ton yesterday on otTi<*ial busi-
ness, and was a guest at the
Rice hotel. He returned to
| Bastrop last uigiit with a negro
.wanted there on the charge of
attempt to kill.
Since his election as sheriff
three years ago, Mr. Townsend
I has taken au active interest in
tht' affairs of the Texas Sheriffs'
association. The fact that
eight murder eases an* on the
docket for the next term of
court, which begins June 17,
may prevent the sheriff from
attending the convention in
San Antonio in July.
Bastrop is gene-ally one of
the most orderly counties in
the State, but six of the crimes
were committed since the last
term of court. Mr. Townsend
states that this record excels
any made in the county for
many years.
''The outlook for the cotton
crop in Bastrop county," said
Mr. Townsend, ''i. very discour-
aging. Cool nights aud exces-
sive rains have proven disas-
trous. The boll weevil has ap-
peared in huge numbers, and
a farmer told me several days
ago that an inspection of his
field showed every stalk to be
infosted with the pest. Far-
mers have not been able to work
their crops on account of the
moisture."
"Corn, the othei principal
crop of Bastrop couuty, is iu
excellent condition and the
yield promises to be very heavy.
The possibility of a large corn
crop putting the farmer in good
humor despite the cotton con-
ditions. Last year was a great
one for both products, and the
couutry is in a prosperus cou-
dition."

How dear to my heart is the
steady subscriber, who pays in
advance without skipping a year;
who takes out his dollar, and of-
fers it gladly, and casts around
the office a halo of cheer; who
never says "stop it, i can not af-
ford it," or "getting more papers
each day than i read," but al-
ways says "send it, the whole
outfit likes it, in fact, we regard
it as a buisness need." How
welcome he is when he steps in
the sanctum; how he makes our
eyes dance; how he makes our
heart throb; we outwardly thank
him—we inwardly bless him—
the steady subscriber who pays
in advance. - Exchange.
