Bailey enjoying the distinction of!
being < ne of the foremost orators
and statesmen in American poli- J

the fight now being waged
against him, every person in the

come on that occasion and hear
one of the greatest statesmen of j
the present age.
A commodious building and i

and parents are not, hence they
are subjecting themselves to fine.
This should be observed not only
because of the liability of being
fined, but because of the useful-
ness of complete returns for sta
tistics. Statistics are unreliable
in proportion as they are incom-
plete, they are beneficial only in
proportion as they are complete
and perfect. The laws were
made for the good of all of the
people, the public and private
citizens alike, that is, in order
that we may obtain a better and
more complete knowledge of the
causes of diseases, and environ-
ments that act disastrously upon
all human heingp. When people
can be made to realize that the
observance of certain laws are for
their good, they generally will
then go to the little trouble to
observe them. But if people will
not do this for this reason, they
will have to be made to do so by
enforcing the penalty back of the
law. Let me insist that parents
and midwives report all births
without being forced to do so.
Ignorance is no excuse in law, so
be wise.

The Mothers' meeting held at
the colored school house on last
Thursday afternoon was of un-
usual interest and of much profit
to those who attended.
The following program was
rendered :
1. Song, "Jesus Keep Me Near
the Cross."
2. Prayer. Sister Hargrove.
2. Song, "At the Cross."
I Scripture, Reading of 108
Psalm.
5. Discussion: "Temperance."
by Rev. S. J. Johnson, pastor of
A. M. E. Church.
<). Song "Yield Not to Temp-
tation"
7. Discussion : "How to En-
courage Our Young Ladies," by
Mrs. P. A. Fry.
8, Prayer, Rev. S. J. Johnson.
!•. Miscellaneous Business.
10. Dismission.
The features of the occasion
were the timely and forcible pre-
sentation of the subject of Tern-
perence, by Rev. Johnson, and
'the earnest, heart to heart talk,
by Mrs. Fry, to the young girls.
She plead, as only a true mother
can, for a higher conception and
ideal of moral and religious life.
The effectiveness of her talk was
evidenced by several girls at the
clos '. coming forward and pledg-
ing themselves to the new ideal.
These meetings are held twice
each month, at the school house.
All are welcome. A petition to
C ty Council was formulated
i "tv d, praying the i ity fa-
i to abate certain nuisances.
