One half hotv each day that
is spent in diligen' work will
keep the lawn and premises sur-
rounding any house in our town
in apple pie order, and make our
little city the garden spot of our
fair state.
The parents u ho rear their
sons in idleness are doing them
an unspeakable harm. Every
boy is entitled to know by actual
experience what hard and man-
ual labor means, and to get the
blessing that comes from tough-
ened muscles and a tanned skin.
Do not keep your politeness to
put. on with your good clothes, he-
cause if you do you will surely
forget it sometime when you
most wish t. and even if you re-
member in which pocket you
have it. you will be stiif and
plainly show that it is not natu-
ral. ^
Few towns in the state com-
pare with this in the amount of
business transacted at this or any
season of the year. It has be-
come an established fact that
goods can be bought as cheap
here as anywhere, and in many
instances much cheaper. Hence,
the immense crowds that gather
here every week
If the reader wants to settle
in a wide-awake community, all
he has to do is to look at the local
newspapers. A wide-awake,
well-supported home newspaper
is always associated with good
schools, churches, active business of
and intelligent people. It never lishments in this part of Texas,
faiis. No business man or pio
neer in any community makes
any better investment than in
the support of a home newspaper.
Never within the history of
the old town has Rastrop im-
proved as during the past twelve
months. New and elegant resi-
dences have been erected m dif
terent parts of the city, others
have been remodeled and en-
larged. Among the new homes
completed within the past year
we note those of R. ,J. Brieger,
J. II. Pearcy, Alf Griesenbeck
and W. M. Andrews in the
northeastern part of town ; C. L.
Moncure and IraWynn on North
Main street; George Starcke on
Clay avenue, and Mrs. Mary
Hasler on Pecan and Spring
streets. The palatial residence
of Dr. H. B. Combs, south of
Methodist church, is in course of
erection and will be completed
within thirty days. The resi-
dences of Dr. N. Fowler, .1. H.
Davis, D. E. Roe, W. A. High-
smith, 1'heouore Griesenbeck and
W. B. Ransome have been re
modeled and enlarged and are
among the prettiest homes in the
town. Contractors are at pres-
ent engaged in making exten-
sive improvements in the resi-
dences of Woody Townsend, B.
C. Clark and W. F. Tribble. The
contract has been nivenbyCoun
(> Attorney .lack Jenkins to .J
L. Vv ilhargcr for a pretty cottage
to be erected on his lot recently
bought from Mr. Chester Erhard,
and many others are contempla-
ting building in the near future.
'I ruly Rastrop will soon be known
as "the city of homes."
INTO NEW QUARTERS.
The drug store of C. Krhard &
Son has been moved into the
Eilers building and Thursday
morning workmen began tearing
down tiie building formerly occu-
pied by the above firm and the
L. R. Erhard jewelry store, on
the site of which will Ik erected
within the next sixty days a
modern and up-to-date building
for a drug store, the latest in a
glass front and will add much to
the appearance of the Main
street of Bastrop.
THE NEW FRONTS.
The modern glass fronts re
cently placed in the buildings
occupied by J. M. Holt & Co.,
the Peoples Cash Grocery Co.,
and the building bought by L R
Erhard, the Jeweler, are quite
attractive and in passing one has
but to view the extensive stocks i
within to imagine that he is or.
the avenue of a large city. Mr.
Erhard moved into his new loca-
