The following local items are
taken from the Advertiser of
Friday, April 12, 1884, twenty-
eight years ago:
Col. Morgan, of the street
committee, has had some good
work done on Main street this
week.
Mr. A. A. Erhard, we under
stand, has concluded to build a
$5,000 dollar frame building, in-
stead of brick, and the work on
same will shortly commence.
Hon. J. P. Fowler will shortly
build a live thousand dollar resi-
dence on his lot near the Acade-
my building. Mr, George Orts
is now in Houston selecting the
material for the building.
Dr. D. C. Lea has bought the
fine young match mares imported
by Hon. J. D. Sayers from Ken-
nedy, paying $550.00 for same.
The mares are to be delivered to
the Doctor the first of Jannary
next.
At a mass meeting held this
morning, to consider the ques-
tion of having a court house ball,
a committee of five was appoint-
ed to confer with a like committee
from the Masons, who are think-
ing of taking the matter in hand.
Messrs. Garwood, Lewis, Olive,
Maynard and Jenkins were ap-
pointed on the committee. ( The
meeting adjourned until 9 o'clock
Monday morning,
Rev. A. B. Miley had^ two
horses drowned in Piney Creek
Wednesday evening. He was
driving down the bank of the
creek, his son, Barney, in anoth-
er wagon behind him, when
Barney's horses became fright-
ened and ran down the hill,
striking and upsetting his father's
wagon, which frightened his
horses, causinsr them to run up
the creek into deep water. They
had reached the bank on the op-
posite side of the creek, when a
negro man hallowed, which
caused the horses to turn back
and getting tangled up in the
harness both were drowned.

Mr. O. P. Jones let the con-
tract this week for an elegant
two-story residence. The plans!
were furnished by Messrs. Peter-'
son & Angell and the contract
awarded to J. L. Wilbarger
& Co.
On Wednesday, April 17th, at
4 p. m., the Mother's Club will
meet at residence of Mrs. L. W.
Olive. Let every member and
others interested in the work be
present. The following program
