As a faithful chronicler of pass-
ing events the Advertiser is
forced to note the fact, that in the
old town of Bastrop, which for
near a century, has bourne the
reputation ef having within its
limits the prettiest girls and the
most beautiful women of any
town in all Texas, it became
necessary for the young ladies
iiiul the members of the younger
set to arrange and successfully
conduct a theatre party of their
own. A reflection on our hoys,
olfr On last Saturday nighl,
chaperoned by Mrs. J. Gordon
Bryson, a hunch of our prettiest
girls staged a theatre party at
the (Quality Theatre, after which
elegant refreshments were enjoy-
ed ;ti the Brannon drug store.
In the younger days of Geo.
Davis, B. Clark ami ye editor, it
couldn't have happened, and if an
attempt had been made, the bevy
of pretty girls would have been
flushed as instantanioiisly as a
sportman would scatter a covy of
quail on the opening day of the
hunting season. Boys, don't let
il happen again, it's a reflection.

A SAD DEATH.
It is with sjum ss the Adver-
tiser records the death of Mr.
Charley Wilkes, which occurred
at the residence of Mrs. Lulu M. I
Hodges, 5:510 o'clock, Monday
morning, Jan. 5th, 10!4. Charley
was born and reared in Bastrop
and at the time of his death was
aged -4 years, 5 months and 11 (
days.
Thus it is thai "the old must1
die, the young may die," and !
while at all stages of life death is I
indeed sad, though it seems,
doubly so when a young life goes
out. Charley was just entering!
into manhood's estate, and on
August 10, 1U1U, was happily |
married to Miss Bessie Hodges, I
of this city, and seemingly aj
bright and happy life was in
store for them. Young and vig
orous he Was the pictu -e of
health, yet a few weeks of illness
undermined this strong frame
and just before dawn on the fifth
day of the new year, the sum
mous came and the soul of our
young friend returned to its
M aker.
Funeral services were conduct-
ed by Rev. L. C. Matthis at 2:30
o'clock Tuesday afternoon, the
large cortege of sympathizing
friends testifying to the high es
teem in which Charley was held
by the i>eople among whom he
lived his short life of L'4 years.
The sympathy of the entire
town goes out to the young wife
and to the fond parents, Mr. and
Mrs. R. B. Wilkes, whose cup of
sorrow has been so many times
tilled. May our Heavenly Father
console them and give them
strength to say, "Thy will bo
done." _
