TO THE VOTERS OF BAS-
TROP COUNTY.
After careful and mature con-
sideration, I have decided not to
make the race for Representative
of Bastrop County.
For lack of finances and other
reasons, 1 am unable to make
the race. I very much regret
my inability to do so. Success
is sure to crown the efforts of
any good progressive democrat,
who will enter the race. Will
not some one be the hero for the
cause of good government? In
advance I pledge my hearty sup
port for any good man who will
announce for the office of Rep
rest ntative. The cause of good
government is worthy of any
sacrifice. 1 am very grateful to
my many friends for their kind
ness, confidence, and promised
support. Respectfully,
S. H. Mokgan.

Dr. and Mrs. H. B. Combs
gave great pleasure to their many
friends by opening their beauti-
ful home to guests from H to 11
p. m., Friday, 27th of February.
Although not a star could be
seen in the sky and the clouds
had poured out showers ol rain
during the day, and the night
hail closed in dark and dreary,
all this did not spoil the party
Carriages and ..utos were brought
out, and the omnibus, that can
always carry one more, was kept
busy until the house was filled
with happy guests. Once inside
the charming home there was no
thought of the gloom without.
Cherry smiles greeted "us every
where, from the dainty little
maiden, who with card receiver,
met us at the entrance, to the
pretty scnorita who wrapped out-
veils about our Veads as we said
good bye. Simple, and artistic
decorations were used through-
out the house, with the exquisite
taste usually displayed in all the
appointments ol this home.
In the receiving line were the
host and hostess, Miss Chambers,
Mrs. Richard Sanders, of Paris;
Miss Nina Hooper, of Aust'n;
Misses Ivor and Lee Wilbarger
and Mrs. L. W. Olive, who cor-
dially welcomed each guest. In
the hall Mrs. Crysup served the
most delicious punch, and until
the very ciose of the evening
there was no lack of guests in
this favorite corner. The dining
room was lovely; the handsome
table adorned with an exquisite
lace center-piccc-and vase of pink
carnations, while the chandelier
and lighted candles, with pink
shades; threw a soft rose-color
over the beautiful room. Mrs.
Sam Biggins and Mrs. W. A.
McCord welcomed the guests to
this room, where pink and white
cream and cake, mints and salted
pecans were served.
The hours flew by on rapid
wings, as the music of the band
filled the air with sweet sounds
and the chatter of merry voices
echoed through the halls. Old
and young, grave and gay, mixed
and mingled in delightful inter-
course; ne host i>r hostess could
exceed the Doctor and his charm
ing wife and house-quests in
courtesy, cordiality and gracious
hospitality. As we noted the
happy faces of those present, anil
their evidentdesire to be agree-
ible au I contribute to the pleas
lire ol others, we were convinced
of the necessity of these social
occasions, this bringing together
by special imitation neighbors,
friends, acquaintances, busy poo
pie who live busy lives, and
imagine that entertaining ami
being entertained is a waste of
time. All that pertains to wlmt
is usually called society life, is
not necessarily frivolous. There
should be in small towns like
ours, more of what we all enjoyed
at this beautiful reception,
friendly and informal intercou rse,
the cultured and healthy atmos
phero that is so helpful to all; it
makes our community a sweeter,
better, softer place to live in,
and each is, in a measure, re
sponsible for it.
All too soon good nights were
said, and notwithstanding the
watery streets, and mud that
was the undoing of at least one
machine, I think each guest went
home with a merrier song on his
lips, and a better feeling in his
heart for all, and especially for
the friends who had made the
evening so happy for so many
people.
