A shooting affray occured on
the Miss Martha Vaughn farm,
•i few miies up the river from
Bastrop in which Charlie and
Amos Clark, negros, were wound
ed, the latter thought to he in a
serious condition. John Mackey,
colore*!, is in jail charged with
the shooting.

this week from a visit to points
in New Mexico.

parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L.
Moncure.
Judge S. L. Staples anil At-
torney Aaron Burleson, of Smith-
ville, were in attendance uj>on
district court this week.
Mr. F. Weicensang, the Variety
Store man, has returned home
from market, where he bought
the latest in spring and summer
merchandise for this popular es
tablishment.
Master E. Guso reached Has
trop the paat week and is with
his father, Mr. E. G. Guse.
Mr. O. A. Taylor and bride,
formerly Miss El ma Evans, have
returned home from a visit to
points in Oklahoma.
Mrs. Pete Coulson his return
ed hoim* from an extended visit
to Taylor.
Charley M. Brooks, who was
shot three times with a US-calibre
automatic, just across the river
from Hastrop, Friday morning of
last week, and who at first was
thought to be fatally wounded,
has been steadily improving for
the past few days, and his ulti
mate recovery is confidently ex
pected.

Lynn Stewart surrendered to
officers at the residence of Mr.
J. D. Fitzwilliam, three miies
west of town, and was brought to
Hastrop and placed in jail.
Charley Hrooks is the eldest
son of Attorney and Mrs. R. A.
Hrooks. Mrs. Hrooks was for-
merly (Ktstinaster at Bastrop.
Lynn Stewart is a son of Mr.
and Mrs. El. Stewart, who have
been citizens of Hastrop for
several years, Mr. Stewart en
gaging in the cattle business.
Up to noon Thursday no exam-
ining trial lias been held and
particulars of the shooting are
unobtainable.
On Thursday evening Stewart
gave bond in the sum of £1-00
and was released.

The January term of the Dis-
trict Court of Hastrop county
adjourned Wednesday. Judge
E. R. Sinks returned to his home
at (biddings but will be in Has
trop next Monday to close the
minutes of the court.
The following cases have been
disposed of since Friday of last
week:
Frank L. Park, burglary, U
years in the penitentiary. Park
was formerly a freight conductor
on the M. K. & T. railroad.
Willie Felix, a negro, charged
with the murder of his wife, en-
tered a plea of guilty and was
given a life time in the peniten
tiary.
Frank L. Park, felony theft 2
years.
Eugene Houston, robbery, 5
years-
J. C. Gordon, forgery, 2 years
suspended sentence.

Earl Decherd Killed,
News was received in Bastrop
about 11 o'clock this, Thursday
morning, to the effect that Earl
Decherd had been shot and
killed at Elgin. Shortly after-
wards Will Rutherford reached
here in a car and surrendered to
Sheriff E. IT. Perkins. The ex-
amining trial will be held at
Elgin Friday afternoon.

On last Friday afternoon the
ladies of the Baptist Ladies Aid
Society pleasantly surprised Mr.
and Mrs. Paul C. Bell with a
good "pounding" (not beating).
There were brought good things
to eat galore. Flour, sugar, eggs,
chickens, dried fruit, canned
goods and other groceries, good
home made lard and sausages in
abundance, cake and one dollar in
money. The exterior part of the
body was not forgotten alto-
gether.
A nice party accompanied the
gifts. Among those present were
Mesdames S.J. Orgain, A. T.
Morris, Bettie Price, W. J.
Schewe, Horace Higgins and
Mrs. Record from the Methodist
ladies.
Those sending gifts and not
prose it were Mesdames Brooks,
Turner, Craft, Faimie Moore, S.
L. I '.cannon, Hartford Jenkins,
Miss Vesta Craft and Messers.
