PLAN FOR BOLL WEEVIL CON-
TROL
I have a nlan for Boll Weevil con-
trol now under trial at the Delta La-
boratory <'t Tallulah. La. This pl-ui
doea not include the use of poison, and
seeks to offset the effects of oxee: -
sive rain and moisture to promote a
healthier growth of sap and more-
hardened tifsure. I assume that un-
healthy sap attracts the Weevil ard
softer tissues are easier to puncture
in order that my plan may he tried
out under diverse conditions of soil
and climate I appeal direct to the far-
mer. Th" materials required cost but |
little anu a small plot of ground will
suffice.
The Plan Comprehends.
1 Selection of soil which considers
past season's crops.
2 Composition of fertilizer which
partially excludes American potash
and nitrate of soda.
" Preparations for Broadcasting
nnd Sprayinjf.
Numbers 1 and 2 have already
been determined for the present sea-
son and only number •'! demands pre
sent attention. There is a (iroup of
minerals in sea-water which exactly
meets our require ments for broad-
casting and spraying. If this is not
available. German Kainit contains the
same plus about 12 per cent of pot-
ash. If neither is at hand, common
salt is : fair substitute.
For In ■'!id'";;stinjr use of either in
Ih. order of pteferencc already stat
e< HO pounds finely powdered to the
acre, jus' after second plowing. K> r
sparing u1"' 1 pounds to 100 pounds
of water and spray entire plant as
neon as forms appear in abundance,
t.nd repeat every ten days as often a:,
required.
These substances retard decay i*i
soil and plant, harden tissues and an
repellant t«> insects.
About fifty cents worth of either
material named will suffice to try out
my pi in. and the wh< le of chat will u<
to enrich the land. If any farmer
wishes to make the trial, he should
note down the character of soil, the
turn position of fertiliser and mode of
cultivation and report full details to
me in the fall.
