tunities (hat otherwise would not
have come to her.
First of all, old friends came
forth with offers of a home, and
Virginia found great dillieulty in
refusing them. One by one they
(•eased to importune her as her
"perfectly insane" firmness made it-
self felt and lliey were thus com-
pelled to take iter seriously.
Then the offers of positions of all
kinds began to pour ill 011 her nd
Virginia soon learned liow valuable
her name was. She could sell it
for large sums if she wished, and
in regard to one or two proposals
she wondered if she should not ac-
cept.
Hut a consultation with Mr. Gard-
iner put an end to her interest in
these. He warned her that un-
scrupulous persons could make dis-
honest use of the prestige that at-
tached to the name. Virginia, in
fear of this, promptly turned down
all offers to pay for the use of the
Brewster name.
But the estate was still unsettled
and investigation had shown that
most of the offers of employment
that were made to her were fig-
ments of some Imaginative per-
son's brain or else they required
•experience such as she did not pos-
sess.
Some ot them she might have
been tempted to take had they come
lo Viola Browne, but she felt en-
couraged to wait just a little long-
er and see if something more to her
liking would not turn up. She had
gone throngh the storm, squirmed
under the spotlight, and tt anything
good could come from it Virginia
felt entitled to hold back for it. She

And now here he was. Virginia g|ie jja(j jr0I]e to the hotel man-

have a cheaper room or leave the
had, even if not by her own efforts,
earned her board.
St ill she Insisted upon a cheaper

bath. Now if she got so low 111
funds she had lo accept the free-
dom of the dining room at. least It
would not be because of extrava-
gant room rent, she prided herself
as she packed her things fur the
transfer.
When it was made and site was
settled In the cramped new quar-
ters she realized that; for the first
time in many days, there was a lull
in her affairs.
It gave her time to think of
Oliver and wonder it he had any
news for her. Miss Evans had tele-
phoned several times to say he
wanted to see her, but Virginia had
questioned her sufficiently to make
sure that it was not important and
had not gone down. Now she de-
cided to finish up the day with a
visit to Wall Street.
Oliver professed great surprise at
seeing her and chided her with neg-
lecting him. "But I've been faith-
ful just the same," he rattled on
disnrmingly. seeking to cover his
eagerneBa. He hoped she would not
see how glad he was that she had
come in.
"Have you made any headway?"
she questioned without attempting
ta dissemble her true interest.
"Lots. You'll be rich in a few
months, Virginia."
Virginia drew la her breath

"Are you going to be in your
studio?" Virginia <:une back, mean-

But Nathaniel was disgruntled.
"I don't know," he said shortly and
Virginia's temper flared up a bit
too. A very little, but enough to
check her promise to pay him a
visit.
"Child's spilling a spaghetti
feed," ho went on. "If you're
throwing me down I'll go over
there." He did not mean it i-.s a
threat; rather a plain statement of
intention such as he might have
made to anyone. To Virginia, how-
ever, it seemed that he was holding
Child's invitation over her head aa
tho price of her final decision.
Two bright red spots glowed In
her cheecks and quick, angry tears
stung her eyes. Had he choscn to
name Chiri purposely? Did lie
guess that she verged on jealousy
ot the girl? Virginia had no time
then to decide whether it was
Chirl's invitation or Cliiri herself
that he was using to bargain with
her. Well, if he hoped to fan her
jealousy, Bhe would give him no
satisfaction.
"Then I'll seo you tomorrow," she
said pleasantly. "Have n good

the hook with an emphasis that be-
lied the sweet tones of her voice.
