Plum Growing
In Cherokee County
Labeled Feasable
(Jacksonville Progress)
With proper cultivation, fertilixa-
tion and spraying, there is not a
single reason why Cherokee County
can't raise as many plums as the
Grapeland area.
This statement was made by Dr.
J. M. Travis, chairman of the Cham-<
ber of Commerce's Livestock and
Agricultural Committee, after mak-
!ng a tour of the plum orchards in

more ideal plum growing counties of I A]to.
the East Texas area, the Jackson- ]
villc doctor said, adding "there is no {
reason at all why we can't increase
our production."
East Texas has a distinct advan- '
tage over California markets because
the local season is at least two weeks j
earlier.
East Texas plum raisers get a
"very good" price for their product
in the northern markets, Dr. Travis
explained, because they are earlier
—not necessarily because they are
better plums.
As compared with the California
plum, the local plums—are not as
good, it was explained. However, it j
has been proven by several area plum j
raisers that with proper fertilization, j
spraying and cultivation, the Texas!
plum is as good—if not better—than ;
the California product.
One Cherokee County farmer rais-!
ed plums that were "as big as
peaches," Dr. Travis said, "simply
because he raised plums the way
they should be raised."
