^JATIONAL POETRY WEEK recently was ignored by most
^ ^ newspapers. Even the poets probabty paid little attention to
it But it brings to mind how Americans regard poems and poets.
Some few worship at the poet's shrine and crave his art as they
do meat, bread and wine. Others are suspicious of the poet's
unconformity to practical idea and experience revulsion to poetry
comparable to the distaste upon the tongue of a novice at eating
okra. Others ignore poets and poetry attogether other than to
become a iittie jumpy when they encounter a poem longer than
a quatrain in their readings.
