TEXAS HATCH
OF TREE DUCKS
Austin. — A new fiim showing
the nesting habits of the biack-
beiiiodtreedt'cknowisavaiiabie
through the Fiim Booking De-
partment of the Game and Fish
Commission, it has been an-
nounced by the Director of In-
formation and Education.
This fiim which runs 18 min-
utes, is 16mm sound color and
was produced by J. M. Mont-
gomery, mayor of Rio Hondo, in
the Rio Grande Valley.
The black-bellied tree duck
comes to Texas in the summer
for its nesting and then returns to
Mexico and Centrai America to
spend the winter. Most of them
nest nn the ranch owned by Mr.
Montgomery on the Rio Hondo,
a stream which fiows into La-
guna Madre.
An out doorsman for many [
years he felt that their nesting [
habits should be studied. He!
bought expensive photographic j
equipment, made a camera gun- !
stock and started his task of j
"shooting" the ducks on film.
His pictures are very intimate, i
showing the preparation of the ]
nests, the egg hatching, and then }
the baby birds from their incu-
bation through their iessons in
fiight.
Mr. Montgomery removed the
section of a hoiiow tree where
the ducks had built their nests.
He piaced glass over the opening
and shot the nesting pictures
through this giass.
Ciubs and civic organizations
can get the film for showing by
writing the Game and Fish Com-
mission Fiim Booking Depart-
ment. Austin, Texas.
