The situation of Texas is such as to excite the most anxious
interest and even alarm in the breast and of every person who in-
habits it or feels any desires for its prosperity or welfare.
The whole of this country, with the exception of the tillages
of Bexar and Goliad, has been settled and redeemed from the wilder-
ness by the enterprise of immigrants who removed to it in conse-
quence of the express and e-aRH earnest invitations of the Government
contained in the national an^Btate Colonisation laws. Those
immigrants have faithfully and fully performed their duty as mex-
Ican citizens so far as d epended upon them. They have settled the

country defended itagS^ hostite Indians or other enemies^ ?&ey
bave-aett&ed-tbe developed its resources, thay giving value Jid
character to a large section of the Mexican territory, which be-
fore was valueless and almost unknown* They have introduced agri-
culture and the usefull arts; and if, as has been said by a cele-

the settlers of Texas deserve^who have so materially added to the
national prosperity by agriculture, and arts,and commerce, and 4gv
giving value to an unknown and uninhabited wilderness, and there-
by adding materially to the phisical force and wealth and resources
of the nation. The people of Texas have therefore a just right to
rely with confidence on the *ge government for protection and to
^ ask an adequate remedy of the many evils which arc afflicting them.
