More families may qualify for
the Earned Income Tax Credit
DALLAS—More families than ever may
qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit
(EITC) this year, including those hit hard
by tough economic times who can use a fi-
nancial boost. The Internal Revenue Ser-
vice is organizing a special EITC Aware-
ness Day on Friday, January 29, 2010, to
try to reach out to taxpayers eligible for
the credit. Scores of events will be held
across the country to help people claim the
credit.
"Our studies show that one out of four
families who qualify for the EITC. fail
to claim it,;' said Clay Sanford, a Dallas-
based IRS spokesman. "Many eligible
families are leaving hundreds of dollars
on the table."
This year, changes in the law mean
more money for larger families. Families
with three or more qualifying children
can receive a maximum of $5,657. In addi-
tion, married couples filing a joint tax re-
turn can earn up to $48,279 and claim the
credit if they have three or more qualify-
ing dependents. This top income thresh-
old has increased from $41,646 last year
with two qualifying dependents.
Last year more than 2.2 million tax-
payers claimed the EITC here in Texas.
More than $5.3 billion was claimed on
those income tax returns.
Taxpayers should be aware that this
credit is refundable. In other words, you
may owe no taxes but you can still be paid
the credit. You must file a tax return, how-
ever, in order to claim it.
There are many opportunities avail-
able to get free tax help in preparing a tax
return, including Free File where you can
prepuce and file an electronic tax form
via the IRS.gov website. Help is available
through the Volunteer Income Tax Assis-
tance (VITA) program in community loca-
tions across the country. To check for the
nearest VITA site, call 1.800.906.9887.

Brenda Perrin attends
District lerks' seminar
COLLEGE STATION—Hemphill Coun-
ty and District Clerk Brenda Perrin joined
more than 400 county and district clerks for
the 38th Annual County and District Clerk's
Continuing Education Seminar held at the
Hilton College Station Hotel and Conference
Center on January 11-14.
Perrin said, "It is vei-y important to attend
these schools as it keeps you informed of ma-
jor changes affecting this office and county
and the endless duties we have that change
from day to day in this office."
The annual continuing education sem-
inar at College Station is sponsored by the
V.G. Young Institute of County Government,
which is part of Texas AgriLife Extension
Service. The institute provides elected coun-
ty officials with information and technical
assistance and helps officials complete their
state-mandated, minimum education re-
quirements. The seminar offered 19.5 hours
of credit to clerks attending all of the ses-
sions.
As one of a small number of states that re-
quires all elected county officials to earn con-
tinuing education credits, explained Richard
O. Avery, Director of the Institute, "Texas
county officials get an opportunity to learn
new and vital information, so they can bet-
ter serve the citizens of Texas. The Institute
provides education to eounty commissioners,
judges, treasurers, tax assessor-collectors
and county and district clerks through vari-
ous programs held across the state.
Included in this year's program were:
grand jury records, filing for payment of cer-
tain costs from inmate trust funds; ways to
improve on office operations for improving
public service and with Clerk's Office em-
ployees, and how to keep watch for people Or
organizations trying to file fraudulent docu-
ments in the office."
Perrin said: "These schools not only keep
you updated on changes in the laws and how
to improve your office, but also how you can
help the public in ways that do not necessarily
apply to everyday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. duties in the
Clerk's Office."
