Historical marker worshops to be held in Panhandle this month
AUSTIN, Texas —Join the Texas Historical Commission ('I'II(') at one of 11 histori-
cal marker workshops held throughout the state. Beginning July 22 in Panhandle, the
workshops provide an overview of important historical research fundamentals that can
help comprise a successful marker application. They are free and intended for histori-
cal marker sponsors and county historical commissions. The workshops will teach par-
ticipants to utilize the historical marker web pages on the TH< "s website to assist with
the application process. Historical market's have been a part of the Texas landscape
since 1936, when the Texas Centennial Commission placed more than 1,100 markers
and monuments around the state to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Texas
Revolution and the establishment of the Republic of Texas. One of the most visible pro-
grams of the THC, historical markers commemorate diverse topics from the history
and architecture of houses, commercial and public buildings, religious congregations
and events that changed the course of local and state history, to individuals who have
made lasting contributions to our state, community organizations and businesses, mili-
tary sites and more. The workshop in Panhandle will be held in the Panhandle Junior
High Computer Lab at 1001 Elsie on Thursday, July 22, from 1:30-4 pm. These free
workshops are intended for both potential historical marker sponsors and county his-
torical commissions. A free lunch will also be piwided. To register, e-mail the Car-
son County Historical Commission at carson.chc@gmail.com. For more information
on the upcoming marker workshops, contact the THC's History Programs Division at
512.463.5853, or visit www.thc.state.tx.us to register. #27
Tax credit can benefit working parents
Many working parents must arrange for care of their younger children under 13
years of age during the school vacation period. A popular solution—with favorable tax
consequences—is a day camp program. "Unlike overnight camps, the cost of day camp
could count as an expense regarding the Child and Dependent Cax-e Credit," said Clay
Sanford, a Dallas-based spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service. "The cost of
sending your child to a day camp may be a work-related expense, even if the camp spe-
cializes in a particular activity, such as computers or soccer." Otherwise, if your child-
care provider is a sitter at your home or theirs, you'll generally get some tax benefit if
you qualify for the credit. Also, if you paid someone to care for your child so that you (or
your spouse if you are married) could look for work, you may be able to claim the credit.
The Child and Dependent Care Credit can be up to 35% of eligible expenses, depending
on adjusted gross income. For more information, see IRS Publication 503, Child and
Dependent Care Expenses, available at www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-TAX-FGRM.

Community theatre
group germinates here
Community members interested in reviv-
ing live local theatre met on June 22 at the
Chamber of Commerce. Attending were Di-
ana McGarr, Gilissa Murray, Corey Weiss,
and Canadian Arts Alliance president, John
McGarr. The number attending was dwarfed
by the number of people who expressed in-
terest but were unable to attend due to other
commitments.
"One of the first things I heard when we
opened the Texas Crown was, 'When are we
going to have a local show?'" stated McGarr.
Long-time Canadian residents fondly re-
member local productions of Arsenic and Old
Lace, Harvey, Steel Magnolias, Barefoot in
the Park, and Love, Sex and the IRS.
"Interestingly enough, this month's issue
of the North Plains Coop magazine has an ar-
ticle about live theater in small towns," said
McGarx-. "The bottom line is they ai*e a lot of
work, but they really add to the quality of life
of the community."
Discussion at the meeting centered
around how many and What type of produc-
tions to present. A very tentative schedule
was developed with the understanding that
adjustments would have to be made based on
stage availability and prospective actors. At
present, the schedule includes a comedy in
November, a drama in January and a mys-
tery in March.
The group plans to meet again in August
to continue the planning process. No date has
been set for that meeting. At that point, spe-
cific plays and dii'ectors will be selected. Fol-
lowing that, auditions will be held.
"There's a lot more to theatre than acting,"
observed McGarr. "We need so much more
help with sets, costumes, props, makeup: the
list just goes on and on. Anyone interested in
helping can get more information about vol-
unteering on the Texas Crown website (www.
texascrownhall.org) or they can call me at
806.323.2567."
