one fad is "stressed too hard, It
pushes the other valuable meth-
ods of hygiene out of the window.
A gv:d illustration is the relation
oi food fads to dental decay.
The preveation of* dental decay
is an important! matter and sev-
eral theories vie with each other.
The old theory was very Simple-
thai dental decay was due to the
invasion Of germs into the tooth
enamel. The answer was simple
too. All you had to do was brush
the .teeth'ca'refully-with an anti-
septic dentifrice and kill off the
germs. But the question remained,
what weakness In the tooth was
it that allowed the germs to entsr
and begin to operate?
Qaestiea of Nutrition
This •'•jestion raised the theory
that tooth decay waa largely a
question of nutrition of the body,
including the teeth, and that all
decay couM be prevented by a diet
which was adequate in' calcium
and Vitamin D.
•"As a matter of fact," says Dr.
Thurman B. Rice, Chief Of tho
ouicku of 'Health of Indiana,
•'good nutrition is of importance in
developing good, atrong teeth, but
it is not true that defective nu
trition is the causa of carles.
"We have emphasised the great
importance of large amounts of
calcium and lime in the diet. The
fact of the matter da that thore is
such a large supply of calcium in
the bones of every person that it
starve his tee h in thst regard
Inasmuch as the teeth will rcqul
sition from the bones such
amount* Of calcium as they need,
Recent research his shown that
m
] The flowering shrub,
j owes its name t« the fuct
j thrives in dry soil. Tha
I azalea is a Greek one, noci
diet has something to do
dental decay in another conaea-j
tion. The germ known technical!
as lactobacillus acidophilus gra*
in the mouth and produces a rather)
high degree of acidity. It gro
in Utile plaques on tho surfaos
tho teeth. These plaques are haM|
to brush away because they stick;
very tight and arc most likely
lie in those places where- a tooth-,
brush cannot reach. They davslo^,
so much acidity as to fee actttgilty
able to etch the enamel an<
cause a cavity.
There is no doubt
that tho eating of m
encourages the growth
germs and in that way iiiuir«vuyj
causes dental caries. This too, hr
going-back to a very old theory,
that too much ctindy causes
of the teeth.
In ordor to be safe In the
vention of dental decay, it is
to watch all fronts, to learn h<M
to brush the teeth and Veep
mouth clean, build up the nutri
tion with plenty of Vitamin Dand
calcium and to visit your dentist
and sta that the tittle plaqtMaftf
which the lactohaciltoa
lus takes root ara removed at leaat
twice a year.
