THE NORBERT SCHIMMEL COLLECTION OF ANCIENT ART A Special Exhibition at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts January 15, 1975 - March 2, 1975 The Norbert Schimmel Collection is the foremost private collection of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art in the United States. It has been painstakingly assembled over the past twenty years with individual loans occasionally made to significant international exhibitions such as the Age of Tutankhamun recently shown in Brooklyn and Detroit. From time to time individual items have been shown at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. For the first time, the entire collection will be exhibited this winter on a very limited tour to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Fine Art and the Art Museum of Basle, Switzerland. Included in the loan are such masterpieces as a series of Egyptian Amiarna reliefs, the only gold objects from Troy in an American collection, and superb Greek sculpture, gold and silver. It certainly is not an exaggeration to say that it is the highest quality ancient art ever to be shown in the Southwest and will be an eye opener for the people of this area. The exhibition of some 150 objects has an insurance evaluation of several million. It will be accompanied by a major catalogue. There will be educational brochures, special events and lectures, and a splendid installation. During the Spring '74 exhibition of Degas Bronzes, the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts experimented with various installation and public relations techniques.
