ApAs they entered children were given balloons that read
'A Great City Deserves A Great Art Museum," which had
been saved by Ellen Parker since the bond campaign of
five years ago. Everyone was greeted by Museum League
volunteers who distributed gallery guides and opening
day programs. From the restaurant balcony above the
Dallas Symphony Brass Quintet played selections of clas-
sical music. It was a joyous occasion, and both those who
were visiting and those working, sensed it.
Altogether more than 14,000 people toured the facility
on opening day Delighted by the festive atmosphere, they
enjoyed discovering the Museum' multiple facets, from
the exuberance of the Gateway Gallery in the Education
Wing to the quiet intimacy of the small gallery featuring
prints, drawings and photographs. From the serene
lounge in the Impressionist gallery to the animated au-
ditorium where guests were entertained by such different
performers as Sesame Place characters and the Stone
Savage Jazz Band. Everyone seemed genuinely pleased
with the new facility and surprised by the quality and
extent of the City's art collections. More than one person
was overheard to remark how handsome the art works
looked in the spacious galleries, while another visitor
observed, "The building itself is a work of art."hi
Dallasites of all ages enjoyed thcu-
first visit in the spacious new Museum
