Those seeking refuge from the excited crowds inside
escaped by walking through the expansive Sculpture
Garden where children enjoyed the water displays as well
as the art, and all admired the secluded perspective of the
downtown skyline.
Many people watched with interest an orientation film
on the new Museum, while others happily discovered the
colorful Museum Shop and the handsome Gallery Buffet
restaurant. During the day guests were entertained by
artist demonstrations and by performers ranging from
choral groups to Dixieland musicians, poets and dancers
to the numerous mimes, clowns, and magicians who
mingled throughout the building. The wonderful opening
day program, organized by Ellen Methner of the Educa-
tion Department, was intended not only to celebrate the
occasion, but also to represent the broad range of ac-
tivities and programs the new Museum hopes to offer the
people of Dallas in the exciting era ahead.

Charlton with a special citation on behalf of the City' of Dallas, recogniz-
ing his leadership in the creation of the new Museum. On behalf of the entire city I want to welcome all of
you to this Presidents Dinner which helps celebrate the
opening of our new Dallas Museum of Art, a great event
for Dallas. In fact, I think history will show it to be one of
the milestones in our City's life. It marks a lot more than
just the opening of a new art museum. A lot more than
the unveiling of a magnificent new building. It marks
even more the official opening of our downtown arts
district, which is one of the most ambitious cultural
projects ever launched by any city These accomplish-
ments are a tribute to many dedicated people: George V
Charlton, who as President of the Museums board and
now chairman guided the private sector effort. Museum
Director Harry Parker. The Museums trustees, supporters
and benefactors. Most of all the citizens of Dallas who
recognized with their votes and with their support how
much an art museum in the center of the city means to
the whole city
In tribute to George Charlton and all that he did to
make this new museum a reality; I would like, as Mayor of
Dallas, to read this special recognition and present it to
George.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, A. Starke
Taylor, Jr., Mayor of the City of Dallas, so grant and confer
upon George V Charlton this certificate of special recog-
nition for his dedicated work in the creation and opening
of this magnificent new Dallas Museum of Art, which will
mean so much for our city and its citizens, now and in
the generations to come.
A. Starke Taylor, Jr.
Mayor of Dallas
