From the Critics
During the past few months many journalists have
visited Dallas to inspect the City's new Museum. Some of
the visitors are architecture and art critics while others
write general feature articles and travel stories. The fol-
lowing excerpts, drawn from a broad range of local,
regional, and national publications, illustrate the type of
favorable criticism the new Dallas Museum of Art has
received thus far.
When the new Dallas Museum of Art opens ... visitors will
discover that the spacious building offers something for evcry-
body - an excellent collection of art and sculpture for afti-
cionados, an introduction to cultural affairs for the average
citizen and educational facilities for students of all ages. Built
with a combination of public and private funds, the museum
belongs to all Dallasites, and we urge residents and visitors to
take advantage of this impressive structure and its well-displayed
works of art.

We will have much to admire in the grandeur of the new DMA
and the expanded scope of its collections. The Museum will
attract visitors, money and vitality downtown. In addition to
these attributes, we should recognize the impact a great mu-
seum has on the quality of life enjoyed by the city as a whole
and by the individual citizen.

It works. Whatever else may be said for Edward Larrabee
Barnes' new Dallas Museum of Art - and there is a great deal to
be said for it - the building works, just as Dallas itself is
sometimes said to work, smoothly The building works as a civic
monument and as a civic symbol ... (and) the building works
superbly as a museum.

In one dramatic act, the Dallas Museum of Art has come of age
and gained a more youthful image. Its galleries are comfortable
and varied ... The lighting is subtle, allowing the art to shine ...
Its potential is limitless, because the building itself is so flexible.
This is obviously a museum that intends to grow in collections,
programs and space ... A museum that so beautifully fits the
needs of the present - yet so clearly provides for the future -
is a good museum. In fact, it is inspiring.

1/29/84The beauty of the (floor) plan is that it is clear and logical, but
also surprisingly varied. Except for the vault, the galleries are all
sufficiently self-contained to create a feeling of privacy; yet open
enough to provide a sense of continuity... the buildings great
strength: its logic, craftsmanship and genuinely welcoming inte-
rior spaces.

Oddly enough, the power of the museums architecture is expe-
rienced best from the inside out. Large slat windows that seem
impenetrable from the street become, when viewed from in-
side, bold telescopes of the cityvs skyline, the sky and other
angles of the museum. Space begets space...The most striking
thing about the galleries is their simplicity - their clean lines
and logical progression.

The new Dallas Museum of Art is elegant, spacious and comfort-
able. Its collections...are displayed with logic and grace...The
installation is superb, characterized by meticulous attention to
detail and an easy flow.

One can feel the energy and dynamism - the forces that have
built this new Dallas Museum of Art and now must turn to its
nurturing and growth.
