Tow truck drivers
face danger daily
BY AMANDA
MORENO
Staff Writer
Flashing lights always
draw attention, but
depending on the color
depends on the respect
and consideration given.
Police officers are known
for being in harm's way
and dealing with danger
on a daily basis, but the
community seems to for-
get that tow truck drivers
are also on the front lines.
"People see the flashing
red and blue lights and
they scoot over," David
Pickrell said. "The amber
lights just don't get that
much attention. People
just don't seem to scoot
over."
The family of Adam Diaz
Lopez, a tow truck driver,
was forced to face the dan-
gerous truth about the job.
On April 21, while doing
his job, Lopez was run
over. He was just east of
Ranger working a wreck.
Adam Diaz Lopez
"We walk in his shoes
everyday," Pickrell said.
"That is our worst fear."
Wrecker services are
considered to be a pri-
vate industry and are not
funded by the state or any
other government agency.
They are constantly for-
gotten about, until their
services are needed.

Dates for the 2010 soap box derby racing season have been scheduled and plans are being made for the events. The spring rally race and
the 14th annual Texas Midwest Soap Box Derby are scheduled for the first Saturday in June and July, respectively. Both events this year are
being sanctioned by National Derby Rallies, Inc. (NDR) and presented by the Kiwanis Club of Sweetwater. The events are being sponsored
by Buck's Steaks & Bar-B-Que and JavaJax. On Saturday, June 5, a rally race will be held. The rally is a good opportunity for beginners
to learn about soap box derby racing and for previous racers to gain practice. Stock and super stock divisions will compete for trophies. The
Texas Midwest race will be held on Saturday, July 3. This event will also run stock and super stock divisions for prizes and trophies to the
top five finishers in each division. As always, the races are conducted on the Crane Street hill west of Mustang Bowl. Boys and girls ages 8-17
are eligible and must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, please call Weston or Vicki Pyburn, 325-933-4382.
