The West Texas Rodeo
Association rodeo season
began its season May 8
and will end this week-
end. The season has had
10 rodeos on five differ-
ent weekends. The finals
will be held on this week-
end, starting Friday morn-
ing through Sunday (July
23, 24 and 25). Members
must attend five rodeos
to qualify for the finals.
This means these contes-
tants and their families
must spend 3 weekends
in Sweetwater during the
season and an additional
weekend for the finals.
During the season, most
competitors will arrive on
Friday evening and leave
out Sunday afternoon.
Competitions will begin at
9 a.m. Saturday morning
in both arenas, followed
by two rounds of team
roping plus a barrel racing
jackpot Saturday evening
while the pool is reserved
for WT families. Sunday
competition begins at 9:30
a.m. after the church ser-
vices. Age groups range
from under the age of five
years old to 65 and older.
These include men, women
and children who are also
parents, grandparents and
grandchildren. The WTRA
offers 14 age groups for
competition in three dif-
ferent arenas.
The WTRA Finals will
be the culmination of the
2010 rodeo season where
the all-around and finals
champions won approxi-
mately $100,000 in prizes
on Sunday at the awards
banquet last year. The
rodeo association has 250+
families and membership
covers the state of Texas,
coming from Del Rio, El
Paso, Amarillo, Tyler and
many towns in between,
not to mention some
out-of-state competitors
from Oklahoma and New
Mexico. Our rodeo week-
ends averaged 1,000 runs
per day in two arenas.
Throughout the rodeo
season and the finals,
