The Nolan County
Welfare Association is ask-
ing for help from members
of the community.
"With the cost of liv-
ing rising, clients of the
Nolan County Welfare
Association are in even
more need of food," said
NCWA director Clifford
Ashley. "Our food pantry
is completely empty and
we are in dire need of
donations from members
or entities of the commu-
nity. Any and all help is
very appreciated."
Ashley stated that the
pantry is down to two
tubes of toothpaste and
that some families are
in need with kids start-
ing back in school. "Some
families had to get their
kids ready for school and
just did not have enough
left for groceries. There has
also been a large increase
in people getting laid off
of their jobs and our food

Celebration held or J.D. Davis
BY AMANDA

Staff Writer
Never judge a bookbyit's
cover because you never
know what you might miss
out on.
To the naked eye, J.D.
Davis may seem like your
typical 85-year-old man,
but the life he lived is well
worth remembering.
"I never thought I'd have
to remember all the things
I did," Davis said. "I never
thought I'd have someone
ask about them."
Davis may not have
thought the things he was
doing throughout his life
would ever account for
much, but to his children,
family members and com-
munity members, he has
served as an inspiration.
"Since we went to church
on Sunday," Frances
Lindsay, Davis' daughter,
said, "We have seen a lot of
the church members and
they have stopped us and
told us what an inspiration
it was. They said it really
touched their hearts."
Labor Day weekend was
more than just an aver-
age holiday for Davis. His
nieces organized a fam-
ily get-together and on
Sunday morning, Davis'
family packed Mt. Rose
Church. According to
Lindsey, nieces and neph-
ews honored Davis with
songs and the rest of the
family packed the church.
"It was an amazing time
for the African-American
community," Lindsey said.
"To have all the families
gathered together and
honoring him,"
For almost 60 years,
Davis has been a mem-
ber of the Sweetwater
community. He came to
Sweetwater in 1952, for a
job. Lone Star Cement was
