Fire consumes home
Sweetwater firefighters extinguished a blaze at 920 Roscoe Street in Sweetwater on Tuesday evening. A call came
in about the blaze around 7 p.m. and the fire consumed the entire mobile home. The home had been set on fire
on Jan. 6, 2011, when, according to authorities and family members, a woman and her boyfriend were in an
argument in the mobile home when the boyfriend told her to get out of the house and set it on fire. "He wanted
to die," said the woman's sister. The man later exited the home before firefighters put out the fire. He was later
picked up by the Sweetwater Police Department and has been taken to a mental health facility for evaluation.
There were no injuries caused by the blaze. He did not face criminal charges, as the home he set on fire was his
own. According to arson laws, a person cannot commit "arson" against his own property, unless there is intent
to defraud or injure someone else's body or property. Nobody was currently living in the home and firefighters
are still investigating the cause of the fire. "The fire burned very quickly, even burning part of the back yard,"
said Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.

Ribbon cutting held for EMA Electromechanics
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Sweetwater Enterprise
for Economic Development hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for
EMA Electromechanics in Sweetwater on Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
The company, based in Argentina, designs and manufactures elec-
tromechanical equipment for the power distribution industry. They
design and manufacture electromechanical equipment for power
distribution including medium voltage circuit breakers, high-speed
grounding switches, arc-resistant medium voltage switchgear, medi-
um voltage isolated and non isolated phase bus ducts and high voltage
isolated switches. The Sweetwater location manufactures parts and is
a service facility for EMA's Medium Voltage Circuit Breakers VDH
model and High Speed Grounding Switches VDH/GSMI model.
As stated by Mr. Eduardo Montich, President/CEO of EMA, "The
Sweetwater manufacturing site is a natural fit in the U.S. Wind
Energy Market. Sweetwater/Nolan County is home to more than
1,900 MW of wind production and in the middle of five counties
in West Texas that produce 40% of the wind power in Texas and
approximately 12.5% of the wind power in the USA.
"The relationship between EMA and SEED began at an American
Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Conference in November of 2007
in Southern California. The culmination of this relationship is the
ground breaking we are doing today," stated Ken Becker, Executive
Director of SEED when EMA decided to locate in Sweetwater. "This
is a big step for Sweetwater and the region as it further adds to the
diversification of the wind industry in West Texas."
