playoff
Saturday
The Sweetwater High
School softball team's
first playoff game in 15
years has been moved up
a couple of days.
Its one-game, Class 3A
bi-district playoff con-
test with Iowa Park will
now be played Saturday,
April 28 in Graham start-
ing at 7:30 p.m. It had
originally been set Mon-
day, April 30 in Graham.
Sweetwater, which has
a 14-9 season record, was
the third-place team in
District 5-3A with a 4-4
record while Iowa Park
was the No. 2 team in
District 6-3A.
This is just the third
time Sweetwater has
made the softball play-
offs since it became a
UIL sport here.
The Lady Mustangs
haven't advanced to
the postseason in soft-
ball since their first two
teams made it, first in
1996 and then in 1997.
Rangers Jose opener to Yankees
ARLINGTON (AP) -
Derek Holland is still look-
ing for his first career vic-
tory against the New York
Yankees.
Holland, the 25-year-old
Texas Rangers left-hander
who got a $28.5 million,
five-year contract extension
this spring, gave up seven
runs over six innings in a
7-4 loss Monday night.
It was the most runs given
up this season by Texas,
which went into the opener
against New York after win-
ning its first five series.
"They're a good ballclub,
but at the same time they
have to face our lineup, too,"
Holland said. "I don't really
read into that much (strug-
gling against New York)."
Holland (2-1) allowed
nine hits with four walks
and one strikeout. He is 0-5
with a 9.26 ERA in seven
appearances (six starts)
against the Yankees.
"He's been very consis-
tent. That's a pretty good
lineup," Rangers manager
Ron Washington said.
"They do their business in
that batter's box. They pick
their spots and make you
pay. And they made us pay
tonight."
Derek Jeter had four hits
to extend his hitting streak
to 13 games, Alex Rodriguez
hit a three-run homer and
CC Sabathia (2-0) pitched
eight innings for the
Yankees, who have won 10
of 13 since being swept in
three games at Tampa Bay
to start the season.
New York led for good
after Curtis Granderson
blooped a two-out single
to drive in two runs in the
first.
"Derek's a great pitcher,
he's going to have a great
season. The Yankees had
some good at-bats," Texas
teammate Michael Young
said. "He's getting to be a
real professional now. So,
he'll make his adjustments,
watch his film, so he'll be
ready to make his next
start."
Josh Hamilton homered
for the Rangers.
Sabathia struck out eight
in his 1 ith career win against
the two-time defending
American League champion
Rangers.
The big left-hander was
pitching with an extra day
of rest after the Yankees'
scheduled series finale
at Boston was rained out
Sunday night, a day after
New York overcame a 9-0
deficit for a 15-9 win over
the Red Sox.
After a pair of six-inning
outings with no-decisions to
start the season, Sabathia
has won his last two starts.
"That's more CC-like.
That's what we're used
to seeing," manager Joe
Girardi said. "I liked what I
saw those last four innings
against the Twins, and he
carried it over today."
Mariano Rivera worked a
perfect ninth for his fourth
save.
Hamilton's AL-leading
eighth homer was a 422-
foot solo shot to right-cen-
ter in the sixth to get Texas
within 7-2. The homer came
a couple of pitches after his
bat flew out of his hands on
a swing and landed in the
front row of seats past the
Rangers dugout. Before that
homer, Hamilton was 1 for
15 with six strikeouts in his
career against Sabathia.
No Rangers player had
ever reached eight hom-
ers quicker in a season —
Hamilton's came in the 17th
game. Rodriguez needed
18 games to hit his eighth
homer in 2002, his second
of three seasons in Texas,
when he went on to hit a
career-best 57 homers.
Pudge returns to Texas to retire
ARLINGTON (AP) -
Ivan Rodriguez made one
last throw from behind
home plate to second base
at Rangers Ballpark.
The 14-time All-Star catch-
er announced his retirement
Monday, ending a 21-season
playing career spent mostly
in Texas. The Rangers then
honored him with a pregame
ceremony that ended with a
unique first pitch.
Rodriguez initially went
to the mound while Michael
Young, the team's longest-
tenured player, set up to
receive the pitch.
But that didn't seem
right, so Young ran out to
second base and Rodriguez,
already wearing a catcher's
mitt, went behind the plate
to a huge cheer and made
a familiar throw across the
diamond.
Earlier in the day, his eyes
glistened and Rodriguez
spoke slowly at first when he
said he wouldn't play again.
It came nearly 21 years after
the fan favorite known as
"Pudge" made his major
league debut as a 19-year-old
with the Rangers and later
played for five other teams.
Rodriguez was surrounded
at the podium by his wife and
his three children, including
his 19-year-old son who is
a prospect in the Minnesota
Twins organization. He
thanked his parents and
brother who sat in the front
row for supporting him since
he started playing baseball at
age 5 in Puerto Rico.
Rodriguez plans to remain
in baseball in some capac-
ity, and Rangers president
Nolan Ryan said there have
already been some pre-
liminary discussions about
making that happen.
Braun helps
Brewers hold
off the Astros
MILWAUKEE (AP) -
Ryan Braun broke out
of his slump with three
hits including a homer,
Zack Greinke remained
unbeaten at Miller Park
and the Milwaukee Brew-
ers held off the Houston
Astros 6-5 on Monday
night.
Braun, who came in on
a 2-for-20 slump, singled
in a run in the first, hit
a solo homer in the fifth
— his third homer of the
year — and doubled in
the seventh.
Greinke (2-1) struck
out a season-high nine
in six solid innings to
improve to 13-0 at home
with Milwaukee, which
won its 10th straight
against the Astros.
With the victory, Grein-
ke improved to 3-0 over-
all against the Astros.
Greinke handed Jose
Veras a 6-2 lead to start
the seventh, but five of
the next six Astros batters
reached base. Houston
scored three runs on
four hits, including Brian
Bogusevic's two-run tri-
ple, before Veras struck
out Jose Altuve and got
pinch-hitter Matt Downs
to ground out to end the
inning.
Francisco Rodriguez
pitched a 1-2-3 eighth
and John Axford earned
his 46th consecutive save
— third this season —
with a scoreless ninth.
Spurs grab top seed in
West with dominating
win over Trail Blazers
SAN ANTONIO (AP) -
The San Antonio Spurs
have locked up another No.
1 seed.
Now conies trying not to
blow it again.
Tim Duncan scored 18
points in what might have
been his last game before
the playoffs start this week-
end, now that the Spurs
have clinched the top spot
in the Western Conference
after beating the Portland
Trail Blazers 124-89 on
Monday night.
The Spurs won their
eighth straight but won't
care about the streak or
little else with two now-
meaningless regular season
games left. All that will mat-
ter is their Big Three reach-
ing the postseason fully
healthy for the first time
since 2008, and that likely
means an easy week ahead
for Duncan, Tony Parker
and Manu Ginobili.
After cruising to the No.
1 spot last season against
all expectations, the Spurs
bowed out as just the fourth
top seed to lose in the first
round. This latest one —
their sixth top seed in the
Duncan era — is somehow
even more surprising.
Two days before Duncan
turns 36, the NBA's stan-
dard-bearers beat out the
young Oklahoma City
Thunder for ultimate home-
court advantage.
Wesley Matthews had 24
points for the Trail Blazers,
who lost their sixth straight
and have one game left in a
tumultuous season in which
the franchise effectively hit
the reset button.
J.J. Hickson had 14
points and 10 rebounds for
Portland. Raymond Felton
scored 13 points and Jonny
Flynn had 10 on a night
when the injury-depleted
Trail Blazers again only
used nine players.
San Antonio could also
know its first-round oppo-
nent as early as today. That's
when Phoenix plays at Utah
in a game that could decide
the No. 8 seed.
Danny Green also had
18 points for the Spurs,
while Parker scored 13 and
Stephen Jackson and Gary
Neal both added 12.
Neal left in the fourth
quarter clutching his shoul-
der after colliding with
Portland's Kurt Thomas.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich
said X-rays were negative
and called it a stinger.
Duncan wouldn't predict
how Popovich would set his
lineup the rest of the week
to prevent any other scares.
Portland is skidding
toward a merciful end of its
first season out of the play-
offs in four years.
Their losing streak is at
a season high and interim
coach Kaleb Canales — who
grew up two hours south in
the border city of Laredo
— was humiliated in his
homecoming.

Let's face it, most of the time it gets lost in the shuffle.
It takes a certain ingenuity to stand out in a crowd.
You have to be provocative. Unpredictable.
A little smarter than the next guy.

It works for them. And, you'll have to admit,
it just worked for you.
