All in the course o( time. 1938 roils
around as per numerical order (see
Dr. Bray fell!' proof by mathematical
induction), and the archytacks gather
around the conference table to cross
their fingers and cook up another cos-
tume ball.
This year the meeting was sum-
moned Tuesday in the Senior Archi-
tectural lab, and ttye assembled mem-
bers of the Architectural Society con-
ceived the following themes for their
romp: a fairyland kali, a scene in
Bavaria, a Shakespearian scene, and n
Chinese garden.
Discussions pro and eon were many,
but the cagiest argument was pro-
pounded by one bright youn^ fellow
who wanted the scene in Bavaria.
"Costumes would be easily obtain-
able," he said, "especially for the boys.
All they would have to wear would
be shorts and a hat with a feather in
it."
In spite of this clever argument, the
literary minded had their way, and the
Shakespearian scene was chosen. The
assistance of Dr. Carrol Camdem, in-
structor in English and teacher of the
Shakespearian course, is assured, and
all possible will be done to insure au-
thenticity in arranging the decorations
effects for the' ball.
The Shakespearian theme will, the
society believes, provide opportunity
for many varied and colorful, and give
full play to the ingenuity of the archi-
tectural students. IfJj'IfS|i ;:i|
This ingenuity, by the way, is great-
ly stimulated by the fact that the Ar-
chitectural Ball scenery is a problem
assigned to senior architects by Wil-
liam Ward Watkin. professor of archi-
tecture.
The architects are on- the safe side
this year with their theme, whose dig-
nity, respectability, and general good-
ness is not likely to be questioned.
Last year a little confusion resulted
from the choice of subject: Paradise
Lost. The idea was to present Rice
co-eds properly costumed as ladies of
such names as Cleopatra, Salome, and
Delilah heWftpft the list. ,* i
The plan was sqeegeed in the com-
mencement by trustees, Lovett, dean,
and people, and the ball was ultimate-
ly. and very beautifully, presented
with the theme Paradise Regained, all
being angelic and satisfactory.
The society will meet Wednesday at
Autry House to choose committees
which will be in charge of the various
arrangements for the ball, and organ-
ize the extensive work of decoration
and construction. . '' , n/ti'ift
EVOLUTION REARS UGLY HEAD

HattJosburg, Miss. (ACP)—A ship-
ment of new biology text books at
Mississippi State Teachers' College pro-
duced some fireworks recently.

A chapter on evolution annoyed John
M. Fwoler, biology teacher, to the ex-
tent that he ripped out the offensive
pages from 60 books.
His action, a decade after Tennes-
see's famous "monkey trial" renewed
the evolution discussion. Mississippi
fundamentalists in 1926 had enacted a
law forbidding teaching or use of books
Which related the theory that man "as-
cended or descended f«om a lower or-
der. of animals."
