Floyd Mechler Scheduled To Pitch Game for Rice; Jake
Schuehle, Henry Hurley, Captain Tom Vickers
Head Batting List; Time is 3 p. m.
The Rice Owls and the Texas Longhorns bring Rice fans their
first local action in the 1938 Southwest Conference baseball cam-
paign when they meet at 3 p.m. today at West End Park.
Coach Cecil Grigg has scheduled right handed Floyd Mechler to
start the game for the Owls. Mechler allowed three hits in six
innings against Hughes Tool Tuesday, and has pitched well in earlier
practice games. Mike Scale will follow Mechler on the mound in
case he does not hurl the entire game.
Batting order for the Owls will be headed by Jake Schuehle, still
an unknown quantity with the willow, who found his batting eye in
the ifist practice game for a :kmg --7^—*—.—r" —

The Owl ice hockey quintet played
what could honestly be called its most
exciting game of the season last Sun-
day night at the Polar Wave Ice Palace
with the Spalding Blue Streak puck-
sters. The two teams were evenly
for onlv about 800 of the more than
1,300 students at Rice voted.
Since the amendment received, how-
ever, the almost unanimous favorable
vote of those casting ballots in the
election, Everett Collier, then president
of the Honor Council, wrote the
amendment into the constitution with-
out the official authorization of the
student body.
The action has not been questioned
by any student or student group, and
since it had and still has the sanction
of the Honor Council, which tries all
violation of student honor, any new
amendments will probably be adopted
by a three-fourths majority oi the stu-
dents voting.

matcliod; in fact, they were so evenly
matched that the score ofter two over-
time periods was still tied at 8-8.
In the first few minutes of play the
Owl forwards, Ross McKee and Lee
Blocker, broke through a disorganized
Blue Streak defense to slip two shots
past the Blue Streak goalie. McKee
scored both goals, but one was a result
of a nice pass from Blocker.
Monroe Ivey, who was holding down
his regular defense position also broke
through in this early rally to make it
three for Rice, The Blue Streak for-
waids suddenly woke up after this
barrage and put over four goals before
the period ended. Their defense tight-
ened up considerably also.
The second period was scoreless save
for a solitary jaunt McKee nude to the
Streak's goal to tie the score at 4 all.
In the third period Louie Girard and
Jack Geidert scored for the Owls, and
these points, together with one more of
MeKee's jaunts gave the Owls seven
points at the end of the third period.
