The sergeant who reported that
Iceland belles are just like the cli-
mate is a bit mistaken. 1940 grad-
uate Lt. Max (Pinky) LaGrone told
friends on the campus Wednesday.
Back himself from a six-month stay
on the bleak northern isle, the Ma-
rine officer reported that initial
hostility which caused secret island
societies to shave the head of any
girl seen with a Marine or soldier
had passed, and that Icelanders
were now frequent guests of offi-
cers' clubs at social events. The of-
ficers, he said, are in return invited
to Icelanders' homes as guests.
Pale from a w i n t e r averaging
only three hours of sunshine a day,
LaG rone had lost little weight un-
der the rigors of Zero weather and
windstorms that approach velocities
above 100 miles an hour. Monotony
and boredom, he attested, were the
chief handicaps of serving on Ire-
lands frozen shores.
