The Converse-Dunkel Basketball
Forecast for the week ending a Feb-
ruary includes seven games of in-
terest to the Southwest Conference.
Last Saturday's tilts conformed
66.66% to Dunkel's predictions-—as
far as winners went. S.M.U. (51.8)
crossed him up by taking Texas
(56.0.), into camp, thereby retaining
second place in the league.
Arkansas (62.2) conformed to ex-
pectations by downing T.CAJ. (40.0)
in a rough and tumble affair, per-
haps comparable to the little row in
the High School Gym on 13 Jan-
uary. The forecast slightly under-
estimated the power of the high-fly-
ing Owls, even including the rag-
nots. It only (gave Rice (72.2) a
meagre 50 point margin over Bay-
lor (22.1).
Tuesday night, Texas (52.0) should
have downed their pet hate, A. & M.
(40.4), according to Dick Dunkel, At
the present writing, it is too early
to check his accuracy on this one.
Tonight Arkansas (66.2> tangles
wilbh a non-conference rival, Pitts-
burgh Teacher (54.4) and should
handle that team without too much
difficulty. Friday, S.M.U. (55.8) will
encounter the football squad of A. &
M. (36.4) which should not mate-
rially affect the conference standing
of either. Rice (68.2) is picked to
trounce T.C.U. (49.0) in Forft Worth
the same night.

"Bird" Chandler's tip-in against
die Bears Saturday night will long
be remembered (in the record books
anyway). It was heade-up playing
on Bill's part after "County-fair"

Henry's own 246-podnt record
should be the third to fall.

TRACK
The thinly clads started training
last week under the capable tutelage
of Cecil Grigg. Prospects are better
than last year at this time when the
Navy called Bob Porter, Jim Love
and others to service leaving a squad
of comparative greenhorns.
'Only members of the *44 squad
not back this year are John Andrew,
pole-vaulter, and Glenn Bryan,
sprinter. With the addition of
Walmsley, the team should be
primed for thedr best effort since
Bill Cumraing's time.

nessmen. Among these prizes are
cartons of cigarettes for eaoh mem-
ber of the winning team and credit
slips for purchases in the ship's serv-
ice store for individual winners.

I wondered how Arkansas scored
so tremendously against Baylor—I
guess the Bears are building a lot
of character this season. Seriously,
Baylor should be commended for
p laying out their schedule.
That 96 point grand total may
well stand for a long time—in fact,
it WILL stand until we get another
five like this year's Bears. The
"rag-nots" turned in a fine perform-
ance and all hands rang the bell—
even Davenport (for us, too). Murph
might have set a new scoring record
for a single game if he'd played long
enough; he was strictly in a tree and
couldn't miss.
"County-fair" Mcfiride says he
and Bird had it framed to miss the
free toss and get "2"—it's no* good
to merely tie a record. There's no
doubt that Bird Chandler was really
on the A-lert. Big disappointment
of the night was that Goodearle and
I didn't get in the game. The "Lock-
et" had been holding long practice
sessions in the dark hours after the
varsity left, and it is no secret that
he was primed and ready to go. It
would have been a hot scoring race
between him and Roach, but "Willie"
has been handicapped by the size 12
brogans he's been sporting on the
court.
Some time if you get a chance to
watch Bill Henry comb his hair, take
a quick look-see and notice the re-
semblance to Ish-Kabibble.
The "rag-not" scoring race has
narrowed down as the aces approach
the home stretch. Bird, Murph, and
Willie are expected to fight it out
for the Goodearle-Dryden annual
award, consisting, this year of a pa-
per glove recently patented by Good-
earle—he says it'works fine.
Standings:
For For Grand
Name Us Them Total
"Bird" Chandler 9 0 9
Clarence Murphey 8 0 8
Bill Scruggs 7 0 7
"Willie" Roach 6. 0 6
"County-Fair"
McBride 6 0 6
"Big Dan" Davenport" 5 2 3*
*Note: (The Nubian has yet to hit
from the floor, but his never falter-
ing eye and precision are pouring in
the free throws.)
We have no betting odds on the
race, but the law of average tips
the scale in favor of Bill Scruggs to
overtake the leaders.
Tomorrow night the Owls face
T.C.U. in Fort Worth and Saturday
take on S.M.U. in Dallas. Don't let
anyone tell you that these aren't
going to be tough games because
both the Mustangs and Frogs have
all to win and nothing to lose. If
Rice doesn't slip up this week-end,
the chances of finishing with a 12
and 0 record are excellent.

evidently a sensational evening judg-

the boys who were there.
There were two heavyweight wres-

a swell show for the boys. Dr. Karl
Sarpolds proved instructive as well
aa interesting with hia demonstra-
tions of defense against knives, il-
